Leicester vs Brighton: Premier League match preview
Leicester City welcome Brighton to the King Power Stadium on Sunday evening. Leicester falls within a Tier 2 region, meaning that no supporters will be allowed in the ground.
Leicester were in Europa League action on Thursday night, as the group stages came to an end. Early goals from Cengiz Under and Harvey Barnes gave the Foxes a 2-0 home win over AEK Athens to seal top spot in Group G.
Leicester head into the weekend inside the top four – 3 points behind league leaders Tottenham – following last week’s late 2-1 away win over Sheffield United. Ayoze Perez put Leicester in front but the Blades were back on level terms two minutes later. The game looked to be heading to a draw before Jamie Vardy scored a winner in second-half stoppage time.
Brighton lost 2-1 at home to Southampton last weekend. Pascal Gross gave Graham Potter’s side the lead from the penalty spot before they conceded an equaliser on the cusp of half time. Brighton find themselves 16th, four points above the drop zone.
Leicester’s home form ranks 11th in the league, with two wins and three defeats from their five matches at the King Power. Interestingly, only one team in the league has conceded more goals at home than Leicester (11). Anfield is the only stadium to witness more goals this season than the King Power.
Brighton’s away form ranks 14th, with two wins, one draw, and two defeats from five away games this season. The Seagulls did pick up a win in their most recent away game, a 2-1 victory at Villa Park.
Leicester and Brighton have faced each other six times in the Premier League, with Leicester winning four, drawing two, and losing zero against the Seagulls. Last season’s corresponding ended in a goalless draw in June.
Leicester team news vs Brighton
James Maddison has fully recovered from a knee problem and is expected to start on Sunday.
Brendan Rodgers fielded a flat back four in midweek, but could revert to a back three/five. Jamie Vardy, Christian Fuchs, Marc Albrighton, and Kasper Schmeichel were unused substitutes on Thursday and should all be recalled to the starting eleven.
Ayoze Perez was among those partially rested against AEK, suggesting he could be in the starting eleven – although Cengiz Under will be tough to drop following his midweek display.
Wilfred Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy will compete for a central midfield spot alongside Youri Tielemans.
Timothy Castagne and Caglar Soyuncu are both back in training but Sunday’s game is set to come too soon for the pair, with a return in midweek looking more likely.
Having only just returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Ricardo Pereira has picked up a groin injury and will miss “another couple of weeks.”
Daniel Amartey has also returned to training and could be on the bench.
Brighton team news vs Leicester
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Graham Potter confirmed that Adam Lallana is set to miss out once again. The midfielder suffered a recurrence of a groin problem against his former club Liverpool two weeks ago.
Davy Propper, Christian Walton, and Alexis Mac Allister have returned to training but Sunday’s game will come too soon. Mac Allister tested positive for Covid-19 in November.
Neal Maupay, Leandro Trossard, and Alireza Jahanbakhsh all started last weekend’s game from the bench. Graham Potter has not yet named an unchanged starting eleven this season, so at least one of the trio is likely to come into the side.
Jose Izquierdo is expected to feature for Brighton’s under-23s this weekend as he looks to build up his fitness.
Florin Andone is sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
