Betting prediction: Leeds United 2 – 0 Sheffield United

Leeds United welcome Sheffield United to Elland Road in Leeds on Saturday for this Premier League match.

‎The Whites have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 3 wins to Sheffield United’s 1, from their 5 encounters in the Premier League. However, Sheffield United have had the better results in the last decade with 4 wins from 6 matches in all competitions.

The matches in the last 5 years have typically been close affairs with each of the last 5 matches all settled by a 1-goal margin. It is also a fixture where home advantage seems to count for little, with 4 away wins in the last 5 matches.

Leeds United vs Sheffield United: What are the betting odds?

The Whites have won only 1 in their last 5 home matches in this head-to-head. However, they have almost 3 times as many points on the board as Sheffield United this season. Therefore, it is unsurprising to see them start the match as the odds on favourites at 1/2.

The Blades have won on each of their last 2 visits to Elland Road. However, they have the worst away record of all Premier League sides this season, picking up just 4 points on the road all season. This sees then start the match as the 11/2 underdogs to pick up a win on Saturday.

These sides shared the points the last time they met in the Premier League back in March 1994. Odds of 10/3 are available if you see Leeds and Sheffield United cancelling each other out on Saturday once more.

Leeds United vs Sheffield United: Match preview

Being effective in both boxes is often the difference between success and failure, trophy winners and runners up. This was certainly the case in Bramall Lane back in September which perhaps acted as an early warning of the season to come for Sheffield United.

Patrick Bamford was the goalscorer in Leeds’ smash-and-grab visit to Bramall Lane in the first Premier League between these sides since the early 1990s.

While Leeds United dominated the possession with 64% of the ball, the Blades were very effective with the little possession they had. As a result, the sides shared a similar shot count with 17 shots to 15 for Leeds. The sides had 2 big chances apiece and the expected goals (or xG) for the match was also evenly split at 1.53 to 1.47 in favour of Sheffield United.

However, Sheffield United’s problems in both boxes were apparent in this match. Firstly, only 4 of the 15 shots they created fell to their forwards. The best of these was Oliver Burke’s valued as being a 0.05xG chance which was blocked by the Leeds defence. Therefore, it is no surprise to see that only 4 of their 15 shots were on target given their struggle to get the ball to their best finishers in dangerous areas.

Leeds on the other hand, had no such problems. Between them, Bamford and Rodrigo had 7 shots at the Sheffield United goal. Three of Bamford’s, including the winning goal, coming very central and within 12 yards of goal; the prime goalscoring territory for a forward.

It has been debated all season long whether Sheffield United’s forwards are the problem, or a lack of service. What was clear in September though, they failed to get their forwards on the ball, in dangerous areas unlike Leeds and particularly Bamford.

At the other end, Ramsdale’s 8 saves from 9 shots on target in this match won’t highlight any goalkeeping issues this season. However, overall this season the £18.5m summer signing from Bournemouth has failed to match the levels set by Dean Henderson the previous campaign.

When looking at performances against post-shot xG, last season Henderson typically came out among the top group of goalkeepers in the Premier League with the likes of Alisson, Emiliano Martínez and Nick Pope. Ramsdale, on the other hand, is among the bottom 5 for starting goalkeepers in the Premier League this season along with Alex McCarthy, Karl Darlow, Rui Patricio and Jordan Pickford.

Leeds United team news vs Sheffield United

Adam Forshaw remains on the long-term injury list with a hip injury that has caused him to sit out the season so far.

Mateusz Klich could miss his first match of the season at the weekend having tested positive for the Coronavirus. While he may get the all-clear before kick-off, it remains to be season whether he is well enough to be involved in the match.

Liam Cooper is expected back at the heart of defence for Leeds. He missed the previous 2 matches with illness. However, the international break would have provided him plenty of time to recover.

Pablo Hernandez is in a similar position to Cooper, having missed the previous 3 matches with a small muscular issue. The international break came at a good time for him and he should

The international break likely came at a good moment for Rodrigo Moreno also. He has been struggling since returning from his groin injury and missed the previous match for Leeds. Rodrigo is expected back in the Leeds squad for Saturday’s match.

Robin Koch made a 1 minute cameo appearance against Fulham just before the international break. He hasn’t started for Leeds since early December due to a knee injury but could be recalled to the starting lineup here with one of Diego Llorente or Pascal Struijk possibly making way.

Sheffield United team news vs Leeds United

Sander Berge is back in training follow a serious hamstring injury against Manchester United in December. This match comes too soon in his rehabilitation but he is expected back on the pitch some time in April.

Defensive duo Jack O’Connell and John Egan are likewise back in training. However, after long periods out for O’Connell in particular, it could still be some time before they are ready to start matches again.

Jack Robinson and Jack Rodwell, who have offered depth at central defence in their absence, are also ruled out with injury.

Chris Basham hasn’t returned to training yet since injury ruled him out of the FA Cup match at Stamford Bridge before the international break.

Billy Sharp suffered a pelvic injury in training causing him to miss the trip to Stamford Bridge. He is expected to be out for a few weeks.

Ethan Ampadu will return after being unavailable against Chelsea as loan players are unable to play against their parent club.

George Baldock and Enda Stevens are expected to return to their usual wing-back positions. Jayden Bogle and Ben Osborn will make way for the returning Ampadu and Kean Bryan.
