Leeds United vs Arsenal: Premier League match preview
Leeds United host Arsenal at Elland Road on Sunday for the first time since an FA Cup clash in January 2011 – and for the first time in the Premier League since April 2004.
Arsenal suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa prior to the international break, leaving them 11th in the table. The Gunners have already last 4 matches this season, although they’re only four points off the top four.
Arsenal are one of three sides yet to draw a match this season. A win for Arsenal would certainly propel them into the top half of the table.
Leeds have been very inconsistent, but highly entertaining, since returning to the Premier League. Last month they held Manchester City to a draw and beat Villa 3-0 away from home, but followed that up with consecutive 4-1 defeats.
Leeds are 15th in the table, level on 10 points with Manchester United and two points behind the Gunners.
Arsenal have won two and lost two of their four league games on the road this season, while Leeds have won 1, drawn 1, and lost two of their four matches at Elland Road.
Managers Mikel Arteta and Marcelo Bielsa have been highly complimentary of each other ahead of Sunday’s clash. Bielsa in particular said Arteta’s Arsenal “show things that I have never seen”, although I’m not sure what those things are.
Arsenal and Leeds have faced each other 24 times in the Premier League, with Arsenal winning half of those matches, drawing four, and losing eight. The two sides’ last Premier League encounter, playing in April 2004, ended 5-0 in Arsenal’s favour. Robert Pires opened the scoring before Thierry Henry went on to score four goals.
Since then, Arsenal have faced Leeds four times in the FA Cup. Reiss Nelson scored the only goal of the game when the two sides met in the third round of the FA Cup in January this year.
It is almost 20 years to the day since Arsenal’s last defeat at Elland Road.

Leeds United team news vs Arsenal
Kalvin Phillips should be available for selection after recovering from a shoulder injury, although Bielsa would not go as far as to confirm if Phillips would start.
Rodrigo is “less likely” to come straight back into the side following a bout of Covid-19.
Diego Llorente, Pablo Hernandez, and Jamie Shackleton are all doubtful, while Gaetano Berardi and Adam Forshaw remain sidelined with long-term injuries.
Robin Koch had an international break to forget as he started in defence in Germany’s 6-0 defeat to Spain.
Leeds defender Luke Ayling is a product of Arsenal’s academy although he failed to make a senior appearance for the Gunners.
Arsenal team news vs Leeds United
Arsenal fans have been begging to see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang play centrally and Mikel Arteta could finally bow to the pressure following the Gunners’ defeat to Aston Villa. Calls to drop Willian and start the likes of Reiss Nelson or Joe Willock could also be answered.
Mohamed Elneny and Sead Kolasinac are unavailable after the pair tested positive for Covid-19 during the international break.
Granit Xhaka is likely to replace Thomas Partey in the starting eleven. The Ghanaian is ruled out of Sunday’s clash after picking up a thigh injury.
Danny Ceballos and David Luiz were reportedly involved in a training ground bust-up this week, although it is unclear if that will lead to either of them being left out of Arteta’s matchday squad.
Reiss Nelson should be available after recovering from a knee injury.
Eddie Nketiah could face his former club. Nketiah spent part of last season on loan at Elland Road, scoring five goals in 19 appearances for Leeds. Nketiah twice in England U-21’s 5-0 win over Albania in the week.
Calum Chambers, William Saliba, Emile Smith Rowe and Sokratis Papastathopoulos all started for Arsenal’s U-23 side on Friday and won’t be involved.
Gabriel Martinelli has returned to training following knee surgery and could feature before the end of the year. Likewise. Pablo Mari has returned to training after a lengthy ankle injury but is not yet match fit.
