Betting prediction: Fulham 0-2 West Ham

It really is a tale of two ends of the table when you compare these two sides.

Fulham are winless in their last-eleven times of asking, and though they have picked up some points along the way (0-7-4), running into a West Ham side that quickly bounced back after their loss to Liverpool is likely to do little to help their chances of avoiding the drop.

West Ham – if they’re on – should be relatively comfortable here

Winning Margin: West Ham +2

It’s difficult to see another result other than West Ham collecting all three points, but along similar lines, Fulham are rarely embarrassed on the scoresheet. The Cottagers have only lost by a margin greater than two goals on two occasions; matchday one against Arsenal (3-0), and matchday three against Aston Villa by the same score.

Jesse Lingard to score anytime

A new lease on life for the England international seems to be a potential result if his loan spell at West Ham bears fruit. A brace against Aston Villa midweek is just what he needed to boost his confidence. As he won’t be available to line-up against Manchester United in the FA Cup-tie coming up, Lingard could build on his performance with another goal and good all-round performance.

Fulham vs West Ham United: Match preview

There is little to be happy about if you are affiliated with Fulham this season. After returning to the Premier League by way of a promotion playoff final win against Brentford, the prospect of an immediate return to the Championship looms over Craven Cottage and manager Scott Parker.

Finding the tactical balance once you reach the English top flight is a tricky waterway to negotiate, as once famously reflected on by Norwich manager Daniel Farke. Teams so often try to be stout and difficult to break down at the back, while hoping to find enough goals to see out a required number of results to remain up. Fulham have managed to successfully win half that battle, but the incredible lack of goals remains the issue.

At current, the Cottagers sit eight points adrift of Burnley (17th) without a paddle. Seven draws from their last eleven fixtures was promising on some level, but certainly highlighted how different their season could have gone if just a few more goals could be squeezed out of the team. With a defensive record better than Leeds United, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, and level Wolves, sitting between eight and fifteen points worse-off than sides Parker’s troops have defended better than is a hard pill to swallow.

Another test against high-flying West Ham looms, and failure to get anything from the match could see Fulham slip even further down the table if West Bromwich Albion decide it prudent to pounce on a wounded Tottenham-side. If Fulham do find goals – and a bit of extra quality – from somewhere, a last-gasp dash to safety could be on the cards.

Temporarily blip for West Ham United proves no stumbling block

The test of a club vying for higher-placed finishes in a league as difficult as the Premier League is how well you manage to bounce back from disappointment. West Ham’s humbling by Liverpool on Sunday was a potential reminder that the Hammers still had a long way to go. Fast-forward through midweek, however, and David Moyes’-side saw-off Aston Villa while the Reds crashed-and-burned at home to Brighton. Just like that West Ham was back within two points of the current holders.

It has been a season full of surprises in 2020-21, and West Ham have certainly been one of the biggest. The Academy of Football – nearly two-thirds of the way through the season – are within striking distance of multiple Champions League places. The impressive performances of Czech international midfielder Tomas Soucek once again showcase a dominant player in the heart of the Hammers tactical schematic and has offered a fulcrum to rely on. Mark Noble would be proud.

But bigger sides than West Ham have slipped up this term against opposition they should be comfortably seeing-off. Their trip to Craven Cottage presents a possible difficult test if Fulham remain difficult to break down; more-so even, if they can scrounge-together a handful of goals.

Three points against Fulham, and then another hopeful full-haul against Sheffield United in the league would set the Hammers up nicely for a seven match run that features dates with Tottenham, Manchester City, Leeds United, Manchester United, Arsenal, Wolves, and Leicester City.
