After a rough week for Everton, will they get back on track?

Last weekend, the Toffees suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 3-0 at Villa Park.

A Lucas Digne own goal was the second of the three as a depleted Everton were taken apart, particularly in the second half, by Aston Villa.

Before this, the Blues had made an excellent start to the season.

They have ten points on the board after beating Southampton, Brighton and Burnley and drawing 2-2 with Leeds at Elland Road.

In both the victories over the Saints and Burnley, they came from behind to win.

This is something which the Blues had previously only managed twice since December 2017 in the Premier League.

Then, on Tuesday night, Rafa Benítez’s side travelled to Loftus Road to take on Queens Park Rangers in the Carabao Cup Third Round.

Everton fell behind twice but equalised both times, first through Digne and then thanks to Andros Townsend.

So, it went to a penalty shootout and the first 12 were all converted by both teams.

Michael Keane, Mason Holgate, Andros Townsend, Demarai Gray, Anthony Gordon and Abdoulaye Doucouré all making no mistake.

Then came the drama; Ben Godfrey saw his effort saved, only for the referee to order a retake as QPR’s goalkeeper was off his line.

Godfrey, nervelessly, scored second time round but this only delayed the inevitable.

Tom Davies missed Everton’s next kick as the Championship side advanced 8-7 on penalties.

Another shot at the Toffees’ first major silverware since the 1995 FA Cup is gone.

So, despite making an excellent start, this week’s events means the not particularly popular Benítez is now under the microscope.

Nothing less than a victory here will, at least to some degree, keep Evertonians on side, so will they claim all three points?

Will Norwich get off the mark?

As for Norwich City, their winless start to the campaign continues.

In fairness, the Championship champions were handed a devilishly tough start, facing three of last season’s top five in August.

So, it was no surprise that the Canaries ended the month with no points on the board, losing to Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester.

Then, Daniel Farke’s side faced the only club below them, Arsenal, and were beaten 1-0 in North London.

Thus, given that they had been dragged to the division’s basement, last Saturday’s home meeting with Watford held heightened importance.

But, once again, Norwich were beaten, going down 3-1 despite Teemu Pukki making it 1-1 just before the interval.

This means the Yellows have now lost 15 consecutive Premier League matches, an English top-flight record under the same manager.

Norwich’s last three top-tier adventures have all ended in relegation, and this one looks like going the same way.

Although, they are the fifth side to start a Premier League season with five straight defeats and two of the previous four survived.

Farke may have hoped that a midweek Carabao Cup tie would be a welcome distraction, as it was in round two when they hammered Bournemouth 6-0.

But, on Tuesday, a much-changed Liverpool eased to a 3-0 victory at Carrow Road.

Different competition but the same sub-standard defending from the Norfolk-based side.

Back in the league, against the other Merseysiders, can Norwich win at Goodison, just as they did back in November 2019 in their last visit?

Everton vs Norwich City betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions and odds

Rafa Benítez isn’t likely to be granted much sympathy from Evertonians but, in fairness, his side are enduring an injury crisis.

This includes in goal where Jordan Pickford has missed their last two games.

Before last weekend, he’d only missed seven of 156 league games since joining the club in 2017.

So, 34 year old Asmir Begović will continue to deputise.

In defence, captain Séamus Coleman isn’t likely to be back so Ben Godfrey could continue to fill-in at right-back.

In the middle, Yerry Mina is likely to return alongside Michael Keane with Mason Holgate back on the bench.

Allan will sit at the base of midfield, allowing Abdoulaye Doucouré to get forward and support the forwards.

But, alongside, André Gomes could come in, making it a midfield three, with Alex Iwobi making way from the match at Villa Park.

James Rodríguez has played his last game in Blue after joining Al-Rayyan in the Qatar Stars League this week.

In attack, both Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are likely to miss this one having both been unavailable for the last two.

This is a serious blow as they’ve scored 29 and 39 goals respectively since the start of 2019/20.

So, Demarai Gray will need to continue his great form this season.

If he nets here, he’d already have four league goals to his name which would match his best-ever return in a top-flight season.

Gray could be part of a front three which includes other summer signings Andros Townsend and Salomón Rondón.

The Venezuelan has now signed for Benítez three times after stints at Newcastle and Dàlián Professional in China.

Iwobi and two 20 year olds, Anthony Gordon and Ellis Simms, are their other available attacking options.

Will Everton get back on track at Goodison?

As for the visitors, Daniel Farke switched to a back three against Liverpool on Tuesday, seemingly as a trial ahead of this one.

So, despite the fact that there will be a change in goal with Tim Krul returning at Angus Gunn’s expense, the same trio could start at the back.

Ben Gibson and Grant Hanley would therefore once again be joined by 19 year old Republic of Ireland international Andrew Omobamidele.

The majority of the XI further forward could see changes, though, with Billy Gilmour, potentially, keeping his place alongside international teammate Kenny McLean.

Farke does have central-midfield options with Mathias Normann, Lukas Rupp, Jacob Sørensen, Pierre Lees-Melou, and Kieran Dowell all alternatives.

Max Aarons will be on the right with Brandon Williams likely to get the nod over Dimitris Giannoulis on the opposite flank.

Further forward, USA striker Josh Sargent is a doubt after going off injured against Watford.

So, Todd Cantwell could return with Milot Rashica on the other flank.

They’ll be looking to support Teemu Pukki who’s scored 13 of Norwich’s 28 Premier League goals since August 2019, including both this season.

Can the Finn fire his side to a surprise win here?
