Match preview

After accumulating a record-breaking tally of 50 points in the first half of the season, will Arsenal remain top of the table from now until May?

In their last league outing, the Gunners claimed another statement victory, this time beating Manchester United in the last minute.

Eddie Nketiah the hero, bagging a brace, including a dramatic winner in stoppage time.

This means Mikel Arteta’s team are now unbeaten in 13 league matches, winning 11 of them, so remain five clear of Manchester City with a game in hand.

The Gunners were dumped out the FA Cup by Man City last Friday night, beaten 1-0 at the Etihad, but can now fully focus on regaining the Premier League title for the first time in 19 years.

Will Arsenal move eight points clear at the top, ahead of Man City’s trip to Spurs on Sunday?

As for hosts Everton, they’ve rolled the Dyche since their last outing, with this set to Sean Dyche’s first game in charge.

A fortnight ago, the Toffees were beaten 2-0 at the London Stadium by West Ham, with this signalling the end of the line for Frank Lampard.

That’s because the Blues have taken just one point from their seven league outings since the start of November this, bizarrely, coming away to Manchester City.

This means Everton kick off above bottom of the table Southampton by virtue of goal difference alone, in serious danger of suffering relegation for the first time since 1951.

Coming into this clash, the Toffees have lost four successive home games for the first time since 1958, a run that included a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal.

In better news for the home supporters, last season they were in equally horrendous form, but still managed to beat Arsenal, thanks to Demarai Gray’s stoppage time strike.

So, can the Gunners claim their first victory at Goodison since 2017, or will Sean Dyche work his magic straight away?

Everton team news

Sean Dyche has only ever won one of 15 meetings with Arsenal, so can he improve that ratio here?

He’s been tasked with keeping Everton up, despite the fact they are the only club in the division not to make a January signing.

It’ll be interesting to see if he sticks with the 5-4-1 Lampard had been using, or reverts to his favored 4-4-2.

With Nathan Patterson sidelined, captain Séamus Coleman will keep his place at right-back.

Neal Maupay scored in two Brighton victories over Arsenal, and could partner Dominic Calvert-Lewin here.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Coady, Mykolenko; Iwobi, Gana Gueye, Onana, Gray; Maupay, Calvert-Lewin.

Arsenal team news

Mikel Arteta rotated a bit in the FA Cup last weekend, but will revert to the XI that beat Tottenham and Manchester United beforehand.

Aaron Ramsdale and Benjamin White are the only two of the XI who didn’t feature at all in the defeat at Manchester City.

Mohamed Elneny has been ruled out for the rest of the season and Albert Sambi Lokonga has be loaned to Crystal Palace.

This led to the surprise deadline day arrival of Jorginho, who scored twice against Everton during his Chelsea day.

Thomas Partey went off a week ago with a rib injury, but is expected to be fit for this one.

Thus, all three January signings, the others being Jakub Kiwior and Leandro Trossard, will be amongst the substitutes.

Martin Ødegaard scored home and away against Everton last season, with six of his eight Premier League goals this time round coming away from home.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Partey, Xhaka, Ødegaard, Saka, Martinelli; Nketiah.
