The Eagles welcome Sheffield United to Selhurst Park in London on Saturday for this Premier League match. The sides share a very even record in the Premier League head-to-head, with 2 wins apiece.

Palace won both matches between the clubs in the inaugural season of the Premier League after it’s rebranding in 1992. While Sheffield United completed a league double over the Eagles last season, with a pair of 1-0 wins.

In the head-to-head for all competitions, the Blades command a slight advantage with 14 wins to Palace’s 12.

Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United: What are the betting odds?

The last 4 matches between them in the Championship between 2009 and 2011 all ended in a home win. However, Palace have won just 2 of their 8 home matches so far this season. They are the strong favourites for the win at 19/20 on.

Crystal Palace have drawn 3 of their last 6 home matches in the Premier League. However, draws are rare in this head-to-head with only 4 matches from the 30 encounters ending in a stalemate. Odds of 5/2 are available for these sides to play out their first draw in the Premier League.

The Blades completed a league double over Palace last season. Sheffield United start this match as huge 29/10 outsiders to win their first match of the 2020/21 season on Saturday.

Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United: Recommended bets

Crystal Palace’s last match in the Championship against Sheffield United ended in a 1-0 home win. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 11/2.

Sheffield United’s last visit to Selhurst Park was back in February and ended in a 0-1 away win. You can back them at 9/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Recent Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United matches have been low scoring games, with 6 of the 7 matches ended with under 2.5 goals. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 8/13 on for under 2.5 goals.

Michy Batshuayi hasn’t had the impact Palace fans had hoped for since his return to the club on loan from Chelsea in September. The Belgian international has 5 goals in 3 games for his country this season, but is yet to find the net in his 10 appearances for the Eagles. The 27-year-old striker is the favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday at 9/2. Or 13/8 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Sheffield United.

Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United: Match preview

This match features the two teams with the most wasteful strikers in the Premier League.

Winger Wilfried Zaha is often used as a forward these days for Palace. This after two seasons of watching Christian Benteke, Cenk Tosun and Michy Batshuayi struggle to lead the line and get amongst the goals.

Since his debut season for the Eagles during which he scored 15 goals, Benteke has got 3 goals or less in each of his last 3 seasons at the club. He has 9 goals in his last 83 league games for Palace; an average of a goal every 9 ¼ games.

The expected goals (or xG) of those shots indicated the number of goals an average finisher should be reasonably expected to score based on the chances that came their way. For Benteke, his xG across those 83 games was 22.2. He is performing at roughly 40% of his xG.

Batshuayi’s problem is a very different and likely more concerning one for the manager. His xG across his 10 appearances this season is just 0.69; or 0.15 per 90. He is yet to get a big chance in the league this season and has just 3 shots on target.

It would take him 7 full matches to accumulate 1.0 xG. As Shearer has said on Match of the Day countless times ‘the time to worry about a striker isn’t when missing chances, but when they aren’t getting chances at all’.

Sheffield United’s mis-firing forwards

United’s problems in attack have already been well documented this season, including by us in our preview for the match against Southampton.

Since then, they have saw a dramatic improvement with 3 goals in 4 games. While this is still nowhere near enough to save them from the situation they are in, it is a step in the right direction for a side with 5 goals from 12 games.

The concern remains though that their two young, big money signings in attack have just 1 goal between them in 25 games (or 1381 minutes) combined.

David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp have both looked more effective in front of goal for the Blades this season. However, at 33 and 34 years old respectively, they won’t be part of the club’s long term plans.

With relegation looking inevitable, they should focus on the players who will be here next season and crucial to winning promotion again at the first attempt. Even if so far they have failed to live up to the price tags United paid for them.

Crystal Palace team news vs Sheffield United

Connor Wickham, Wayne Hennessey, Nathan Ferguson and Martin Kelly remain ruled out due to injuries or fitness issues.

Max Meyer never had the impact at Palace many expected when he signed for the club in 2018. He is out of contract in the summer and is now free to start speaking to clubs. He hasn’t been involved in a matchday squad since the 1-2 win at Fulham in October and isn’t expected to play for the club again.

Gary Cahill is still a major doubt for Palace due to a hamstring problem picked up against Liverpool.

Mamadou Sakho made a return to the bench for the 1-1 draw against Leicester having recovered from his slight calf strain. He is unlikely to disrupt the Tomkins-Kouyaté partnership that served Palace well against the Foxes though.

John Lundstram

Sheffield United team news vs Crystal Palace

Jack O’Connell is ruled out for this season following an operation on his knee.

Sander Berge has joined him on the long-term injury list this month, having had an operation on his tendon. This will likely rule him out for 3-4 months.

John Lundstram will serve the final match of his 3-match ban following his sending off against Brighton. Their makeshift midfield of Ben Osborn and Ethan Ampadu is expected to continue in the absence of both Berge and Lundstram.

Oliver McBurnie is the only other major doubt for Chris Wilder’s side. He has only managed 45 minutes across the last 4 games and is only expected on the bench at best for their first match of 2021.
