Betting prediction: Crystal Palace 1-0 Burnley

Everything about this match screams a 0-0 bore draw, but both teams do still have something to play for; a reason to push for three points. Crystal Palace arguably have the better overall quality, even if Wilfried Zaha does not feature. It may take a moment of individual brilliance to bring something extra, but Palace should have just enough to maybe squeak this one, but only just.

Winning Margin: Crystal Palace +1

This goes hand-in-hand with the overall betting prediction, but also some of the supportive data behind it. Five goals in their last 4 games are hardly anything to write home about for Palace, and those struggles are sure to be exacerbated if Zaha is missing. Goals still remain anemic overall for Burnley this season as well, though they themselves can still find a way if the cards fall fairly.

Crystal Palace vs Burnley: Match preview

For a club like Crystal Palace, it’s never easy to put together seasons where you overachieve and really push for a top-eight finish in the Premier League. Midtable seems to be the Eagles’ ceiling at the moment, and though they showed some encouraging signs during points of the current campaign, sitting thirteenth in the table with an outside chance of finishing in the top half is the best the club can hope for given the current strength of the Premier League.

At the very least, Palace is decent at getting results against sides they should be beating, but the frustration behind them is their inability to perform to a level greater than their mean average with any sort of regularity, which is a factor necessary for clubs to claw up the table into the top half or above.

Palace are poor without Wilfried Zaha

The greatest concern coming into the weekend for Roy Hodgson is the expected continued absence of star-man Wilfried Zaha, who missed the Eagles’ fixture against Leeds United. Their 2-0 defeat to The Whites was unfortunately expected, and the absence of Zaha nearly guaranteed it. Without the Ivorian sparkplug, Palace has lost a shade under ninety percent of their fixtures since he returned to the club in 2014-15. Moreover, of those seventeen defeats (out of nineteen matches without Zaha), Palace failed to score in fifteen of them.

Without the club leading goalscorer, and greatest overall threat in the final third, Crystal Palace are just not nearly as dangerous to negotiate. Against Burnley, Hodgson must find a way to get the most from a side that seems to simply be unable to cope without their best player.

Sean Dyche insists its all about points for Burnley right now

Sitting eight points clear of Fulham in 18th is, at the very least, somewhat comforting for Burnley and manager Sean Dyche. Despite the relative albeit temporary safety net that has been garnered, the Clarets are hardly safe for the remainder of the season. The upcoming stretch of fixtures for the Turf Moor outfit could be viewed as a three-match stretch where three-point hauls should be the rule rather than the exception.

Squaring off against a Palace side bereft of Zaha would be a perfect time to steal points which they may otherwise struggle to get, and the resulting fixtures against relegation candidates Fulham and West Bromwich Albion are unquestionable win or bust. But Dyche would rather take it one step at a time and give each fixture its due-diligence as a tough day at the office than viewing anything as a guarantee.

It is a sensible stance to take by the Kettering-native, who is clearly unwilling to put undue pressure on his side as they look to negotiate potentially perilous waters in the coming weeks. There is still a question of where the goals will come from for Burnley, though. With just fourteen goals in the league this term, it’s the clearest weakness in a side that perhaps could be capable of just a little bit more if goals were not in such short supply.

Leading goal scorer Chris Wood (4) is a doubt for their trip to Selhurst Park, posing further doubts about whether or not Burnley are capable of coming away with the full allotment of points. But much like Dyche has discussed already, Burnley does need to keep it simple and take it one match at a time.

Crystal Palace team news vs Burnley

Roy Hodgson has a plethora of injuries to tackle; Mamadou Sakho, Jeffrey Schlupp, Connor Wickham, James Tompkins, James MacArthur, Wayne Hennessey, Nathan Ferguson, and James McCarthy are all unavailable for selection.

An even bigger issue is the likely absence of Wilfried Zaha. Should the Ivorian not be available, Eberechi Eze could slot in on the left, while Andros Townsend could make it back in the XI.

Burnley team news vs Crystal Palace

Sean Dyche still will be made to sweat over the availability of Chris Wood and Charlie Taylor. Both are still doubts but Taylor may have a small role in proceedings.

Jack Cork is back in training and should be available to feature, while Josh Brownhill could also be involved on some level.
