Crystal Palace FC vs Brighton & Hove Albion FC: Match preview

Both managers come into this match having suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace started the season strong with wins against Southampton and Manchester United. However, they have subsequently fallen to defeat here to Everton and were thrashed 4-0 before the international break at Stamford Bridge.

For Brighton, after an opening day defeat at home to Chelsea which they will feel aggrieved to get nothing from the game, they had three consecutive wins against Portsmouth, Newcastle and Preston.

However, everything good must come to an end. Thus, Brighton suffered three consecutive defeats to Manchester United, United again in the EFL Cup, and then Everton last weekend in the Premier League.

While in isolation, a run of defeats is problematic, both teams would argue they have faced a tough run of games which most sides in the Premier League would struggle with.

A win here will be redemption for one of these managers. Proof that recent results were merely down to the quality of opponents and not a failure on their part. They will be buoyed by the result and hope to ride a positive wave into forthcoming, likely easier, fixtures than what they have faced so far.

Of course, for the other side, it will indicate storm clouds overhead. While it is obviously too early to be talking about managerial departures and relegation battles, managers in the Premier League tend not to last long when on a run of defeats.

Crystal Palace FC team news vs Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Nathaniel Clyne rejoined Palace before the transfer window closed. Right-back Clyne agreed to a short-term deal with the club, having been released by Liverpool in June when his contract expired. The former Crystal Palace Player of the Season is likely to need training and reserve matches to find his match sharpness and is unlikely to be involved here.

James Tomkins was injured for the 2019/20 run-in. He picked up a fresh thigh injury in pre-season causing him to miss every Palace match of the season so far.

His partner at centre-back, Gary Cahill, is in a similar situation. While both are nearing a return, neither is expected to be involved on Sunday.

However, there could be some good news in central defence with the return to fitness of Scott Dann. He picked up a muscular injury in the Eagles’ opener against Southampton causing him to miss their last three matches. He was back in the squad for the match against Chelsea before the international break, albeit as an unused sub. He could partner Mamadou Sakho at the back here.

First-choice left-back Patrick van Aanholt will also miss out. As will Nathan Ferguson, Palace’s summer signing at right-back. They are continuing their rehab for shoulder and knee injuries respectively.

Izzy Brown

Brighton & Hove Albion FC team news vs Crystal Palace FC

The Seagulls had a very quiet transfer deadline day. The only deal they were involved in was that involving left-back Alex Cochrane, who will be spending the rest of the season on loan with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.

Florin Andone is also ruled out after rupturing his MCL and tearing his ACL. He won’t play again until 2021 at the earliest.

Jose Izquierdo and Christian Walton are also out with a knee injury and ankle injuries respectively. Both are nearing a return, with Izquierdo involved in the recent Under-23 match for Brighton.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh was removed during the 0-3 defeat against United in the Carabao Cup with a tight hamstring. He missed Brighton’s visit to Everton and could still need some time to make it back for them.

Tariq Lamptey is also suffering from tightness in his hamstring. However, this isn’t as serious as Jahanbakhsh’s and he could make it back in time for Sunday.
