Betting prediction: Chelsea 2 – 0 Southampton

Chelsea welcomes Southampton to Stamford Bridge in London on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Blues have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 24 wins to Southampton’s 9, from their 44 encounters in the Premier League.

Interestingly, Chelsea have a better record on the road in this head-to-head, with a 55% win rate in Southampton versus 50% here at Stamford Bridge. The numbers suggest the Saints typically turn up here playing for a point, with a third of the matches having ended in a stalemate compared to a quarter of those in Southampton.

Chelsea will be wary of the fact that that they haven’t won any of their last 3 home matches in this head-to-head.

Chelsea vs Southampton: Recommended bets

Chelsea’s last win in this head-to-head in London was a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley back in 2018. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of Chelsea 2 – 0 Southampton is available at odds of 7/1.

1-0 Chelsea win. Chelsea’s last league victory at the Bridge over Southampton came back in 2017, by a scoreline of one goal to nil. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 7.5/1

1-1 draw. These sides played out a 1-1 draw in Southampton when they last met in the league back in February. Odds of 11/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

0-2 Southampton win. Southampton were the last side to pick up a win in this head-to-head, winning 0-2 at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day of 2019. You can back them at 41/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. The last 12 matches in this head-to-head have alternated between a low scoring game followed by a high scoring game. With the last match finishing 1-1 back in February, it means we are now due an over 2.5 goals game for the pattern to continue. You can back a high scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 1.72/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Timo Werner Goalscorer. Werner was the best player on the pitch when these teams met at Stamford Bridge last season in a 3-3 draw. The forward scored a brace before setting up his German compatriot Kai Havertz for the third.

The 25-year-old is 6.5/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday, just as he did last season. Or you can back Werner at 2.62/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Southampton.

Chelsea vs Southampton: What are the betting odds?

Despite failing to win any of their last 3 home games against the Saints, the Blues are massive favourites at 1.33/1 to take all 3 points on Saturday.

Whereas Southampton are 8.5/1 to pick up a second away win in three visits to Stamford Bridge.

Odds of 5/1 are available if you see Chelsea and Southampton cancelling each other out on Saturday, to extend the latter’s unbeaten run in this head-to-head to four games.

Chelsea vs Southampton: Match preview

Southampton are inching towards becoming Chelsea’s ‘bogey team’. The Pensioners are winless in the last 3 matches against the Saints, picking up just 2 points from 9 in that time.

Of course, only one of those matches was in Thomas Tuchel’s time in charge at the Bridge, and it came near the start of his reign, bringing to an end a run of 4-straight Premier League wins.

The two managers are also very familiar with each other from their time in the Bundesliga. Tuchel has the upper hand from the matches in Germany with 3 wins to 1. However, 2 of those clashes came when Ralph Hasenhüttl was in charge of lowly FC Ingolstadt, who were no match for Tuchel’s Dortmund.

The following season, when Ralph had taken over at RB Leipzig, the pair traded 1-0 home wins. Future Chelsea player, Christian Pulisic, even made an appearance in Dortmund’s home victory, albeit from the bench.

Hasenhüttl is back in the position of being the underdog here, with Southampton unable to match the financial muscle and squad depth of European champions Chelsea. However, it could be the perfect time to catch them out, based on form. Or the worst possible time, based on the ‘wounded animal’ metaphor.

After having nothing but compliments thrown their way for quite some time, a poor performance and defeat to Manchester City was followed up by a similarly poor display and result in Turin, against Juventus.

While ordinarily, there would be no shame in losing to Juve in Italy, the Serie A giants’ struggles this season made the result somewhat of a shock. Football is a game of matchups, though, and facing a well-drilled Italian side with the dangerous Federico Chiesa on the counter-attack would pose problems for anybody.

Failing to get a result against Southampton, however, would change things. The narrative would likely shift from ‘understandable’ to ‘in trouble’ and ‘struggling’ in the media. Roman Abramovich is famously impatient with managers, but Tuchel should have plenty of credit in the bank to ride out the first storm he faces.

Then again, Roberto Di Matteo probably thought the same before being sacked 6 months after becoming the first manager to win a Champions League title for a club in London.

Chelsea team news vs Southampton

N’Golo Kante’s positive COVID-19 test was the big squad news this week at Chelsea. He now needs to quarantine, but due to the international break, won’t miss many games for the Blues.

Christian Pulisic hasn’t featured for Chelsea since their 3-0 win against Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season. Although he did make 2 appearances for the US Men’s National Team in the previous international window. The winger is struggling with an ankle injury, but should be available after the coming internationals.

Reece James is still ruled out with an ankle injury too, despite being called up to the England squad. Cesar Azpilicueta will continue at right-back in his absence here.

Mason Mount only managed 45 minutes against Spurs, and missed the Manchester City and Juventus matches due to a minor problem. He is expected back here and could start in place of Hakim Ziyech.

Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell are all pushing for a starting place after being on the bench in midweek. If Thomas Tuchel looks to rotate his players for fresh legs here, they will be the main benefactors.

Southampton team news vs Chelsea

Armando Broja will miss this match for the Saints as he is unable to play against his parent club as per the Premier League’s loan rules. The 20-year-old striker has managed 4 league appearances from the bench this season, since joining on loan from the Blues.

Sam McQueen is still out with a ruptured cruciate ligament. Given the fact that he has been out for 3 years now, it is doubtful he will ever play again at Premier League level.

Jack Stephens will likely be out for the remainder of 2021, having suffered an injury to the tendon in his knee against Manchester City.

William Smallbone has had an injury riddled last 2 seasons with the Saints. He is now back training with the first-team squad, but will need some time to build up fitness and may get several reserve appearances before being involved on senior matchdays again.

Stuart Armstrong was an unused sub on the opening day of the season but has been missing ever since with a lower leg injury. Like Smallbone, he is now back in training and could be available from the bench on Saturday.

Theo Walcott should also be back in the squad here, having missed the last 3 Premier League games due to injury.
