Betting prediction: Chelsea 2 – 1 Manchester City

Chelsea welcomes Manchester City to Stamford Bridge in London on Saturday for this Premier League match.

The Blues have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 27 wins to Manchester City’s 14, from their 48 encounters in the Premier League.

It was Chelsea who derailed Manchester City’s quadruple talk last season by knocking them out of the FA Cup at the Semi-Final stage. They then beat the Sky Blues in the Champions League final back in May.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: Recommended bets

The Blues won 1-2 the last time these sides met in the Premier League. 101 Great Goals’ prediction of another Chelsea 2 – 1 Manchester City scoreline is available at odds of 11/1.

1-0 Chelsea win. Chelsea knocked City out of the FA Cup and Champions League last season, with both matches finishing with the same 1-0 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 9/1.

1-1 draw. There hasn’t been a draw between these sides since the 2014/15 season when both matches in this head-to-head finished 1-1. Odds of 6.5/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

1-3 Manchester City win. Manchester City’s last visit to Stamford Bridge was in the Premier League last season and finished with a 1-3 win for Guardiola’s side. You can back them at 23/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Over 2.5 goals. While the two cup matches between them last season were cagey affairs decided by a single goal, Chelsea vs Manchester City in the Premier League has typically been a high scoring game, with each of the last 5 producing over 2.5 goals. You can back another high scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 2/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Romelu Lukaku Goalscorer. Lukaku was the big-money arrival this summer at Stamford Bridge and he has settled back into life at Chelsea well with 3 league goals in 5 games. However, the Belgian international doesn’t have a great record against City, with just 4 goals and 2 wins from 14 Premier League appearances against the Cityzens. Despite this, Lukaku is the 5/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 2.3/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Manchester City.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: What are the betting odds?

The Blues have won their last 3 matches in this head-to-head and are 2.62/1 to take all 3 points from Manchester City on Saturday.

Whereas, the Citizens are 2.75/1 to pick up an away victory and grab back-to-back wins at Stamford Bridge.

Odds of 3.25/1 are available if you see Chelsea and Manchester City cancelling each other out on Saturday, ending a run of 12 league games between them without a draw.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: Match preview

After a run of 5 home games in their last 6 matches for City, Saturday’s game marks the start of a run of 6 away games in 7. The start of this run looks particularly brutal, with the Manchester giants having to visit Chelsea, PSG and Liverpool all within the space of a week.

Chelsea have also become something of a bogey team for Man City, having ruined their plans for a quadruple last season, eliminating them from the FA Cup before beating them in the UEFA Champions League final back in May.

There is something of a rock-paper-scissors reason behind this, though. Essentially, teams who play in a playmaking system, such as Manchester City, excel against sides who set up to play containment football as their approach aims to create chances against such teams.

However, against elite counter-attacking sides such as Chelsea and Manchester United, they are exposed on the counter-attack due to the space they leave in behind and the number of players they commit to their attacks.

We saw this perfectly in the goal that ultimately won the Champions League for Chelsea, who broke straight through the heart of the City defence, with the Sky Blues left with no spare man to pick up the runners before Ederson was exposed playing high out of his goal, as he tends to do. Interestingly, he conceded a very similar goal in the Copa America final later in the summer, ultimately consigning Brazil to defeat against bitter rivals Argentina.

All this means that Thomas Tuchel welcomes Pep Guardiola’s City to Stamford bridge with a 100% record against the Cityzens in his career. Pep’s only victories over Tuchel as a manager came in the Bundesliga, where the latter was often the underdog at sides like Mainz and Dortmund facing the league’s dominant side, Bayern.

Also, despite spending nearly £1bn on players in his time at the club, Guardiola has been complaining lately about the depth of his squad. They faced Wycombe in midweek with an academy back-4 and defensive midfielder, many of whom were unused subs against Southampton last weekend. Hopefully, both teams can field as strong an XI as possible here to ensure an entertaining match where the best side wins.

Chelsea team news vs Manchester City

Charly Musonda is the only long-term injury problem at Chelsea following his knee surgery.

Christian Pulisic hasn’t featured since a 3-0 win against Palace on the opening day of the season. He is still struggling with an ankle problem but is nearing a return to action. Pulisic faces a late fitness test to be involved in the matchday squad.

Edouard Mendy has missed the last 2 matches with a bruised rib but could be back here to replace the deputising Kepa.

Saul Niguez had another disappointing game in midweek against Aston Villa. Jorginho and Kovacic are expected to return to anchor the midfield here against City.

Timo Werner scored Chelsea’s only goal in midweek against Villa. However, he is expected to be dropped here for Romela Lukaku, with Mount and Havertz resuming their attacking midfield partnership behind him.

Pep Guardiola & Maurizio Sarri

Manchester City team news vs Chelsea

Benjamin Mendy remains suspended pending the outcome of his hearing in court after being charged by police with four counts of rape.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has also been struggling with a knock and is yet to start a league match this season. This leaves João Cancelo and Kyle Walker as the only available senior full-backs. Therefore, Cancelo will continue on the left with Walker on the right as per the previous 4 league games.

John Stones is yet to feature for City this season as he struggles with a muscular injury. He wasn’t included in the squad to face Southampton or Wycombe last week, and it is unlikely he recovers sufficiently to start here.

Aymeric Laporte played through an injury against Leicester which subsequently worsened. Like Stones, he wasn’t available for either matchday squad last week and is unlikely to feature.

Rúben Dias and Nathan Aké are expected to continue their partnership at the back, with Luke Mbete or Kyle Walker available to deputise for either if required.

Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan are both struggling with knocks and are unlikely to make the matchday squad. This makes the decision to play Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden for the full 90 minutes in midweek against Wycombe a curious one.

We expect Fernandinho and Bernardo to start in midfield here, alongside one of Foden or De Bruyne, with the other on the bench.

Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling also played the full 90 minutes against Wycombe in midweek. Pep is likely to rest the pair here with Gabriel Jesus, Ferran Torres and Jack Grealish making up the front three.
