Will Chelsea cling onto Manchester City’s coattails with another victory?

On Boxing Day, the Blues won 3-1 at Villa Park, despite falling behind to a freak own goal; Reece James’ header looping over Édouard Mendy’s head.

But they weren’t behind for long with Jorginho levelling things up from the penalty spot.

Then, Romelu Lukaku was introduced as a substitute at half time and this completely changed the game.

He headed home the go-ahead goal just nine minutes later, before drawing a stoppage time spot-kick that Jorginho dispatched to secure the victory.

This was only Chelsea’s fourth victory in nine league outings so they are six points behind league-leaders Manchester City.

Coming up after this is a pair of huge Premier League fixtures for Thomas Tuchel’s team.

On Sunday, they host Liverpool before, 13 days later, travelling to the Etihad in their subsequent league engagement.

Those two results will have a big barring on whether Chelsea are still in the title race or not come mid-January.

The good news for this fixture is that the Blues boast a formidably record against Brighton & Hove Albion.

They’ve never lost any of their 12 league meetings with the Seagulls, the most times they’ve ever faced anyone in the league without losing.

In all competitions, they’re unbeaten in 15 against Brighton, since losing their first ever encounter in an FA Cup tie, all the way back in 1933.

Will the Blues secure back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time since 30 October?

Can Brighton cause an upset?

The Seagulls meanwhile travel to Stamford Bridge more in hope than expectation, but do so after a crucial victory of their own on Sunday night.

Strikes from Leandro Trossard and then Neal Maupay, that were both magnificent in different ways, downed Brentford 2-0 on Boxing Day.

Before this, Graham Potter’s side were winless in 11 league fixtures, dating back to 19 September when the U.K. was in the midst of the fuel crisis.

In fairness, eight of those games have ended in draws, with their only defeats coming at the hands of Manchester City, Aston Villa and Wolves.

So, Brighton & Hove Albion are tenth place, on course for the club’s best ever top-flight finish, betting 13th set in 1982.

They also have a decent recent record in London, losing on just three of their last 13 visits.

This is despite the fact they lost eight of their first 12 Premier League fixtures in the capital.

Also, Potter’s team have lost just one away game this season, a record only matched by the current top three.

So, can the Seagulls spring a surprise in West London?

LONDON, ENGLAND – NOVEMBER 23: Timo Werner of Chelsea during the UEFA Champions League group H match between Chelsea FC and Juventus at Stamford Bridge on November 23, 2021 in London, United Kingdom. (Photo by Marc Atkins/Getty Images)

Thomas Tuchel has had limited options to choose from in recent weeks, due to the Covid-19 outbreak within his squad.

But, most of those players who were isolating are now available again, even if any longer-term affects of the virus are as yet unknown.

Édouard Mendy will continue in goal; he’ll join up with Senegal ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations following Sunday’s match against Liverpool.

In defence, Thiago Silva hobbled off on Sunday and, with that huge fixture to come, is unlikely to be risked here.

So, Andreas Christensen could come in alongside Antonio Rüdiger, with César Azpilicueta also returning at Trevoh Chalobah’s expense.

At wing-back, due to the fact Ben Chilwell has been ruled out for the rest of the season, Marcos Alonso will start once more on the left.

In the middle, N’Golo Kanté is also an injury concern following the Villa match, so Mateo Kovačić is expected to come in to partner Jorginho.

The Italian Euro 2020 winner has now scored ten Premier League goals in 2021, all of which have come from the penalty spot.

In fact, his last 19 goals for club and country have all been spot-kicks, last netting via another method exactly two years ago against Arsenal.

Further forward is where Tuchel now has decisions to make.

German duo Kai Havertz and Timo Werner are both now out of quarantine but both are likely to be on the bench at best.

Romelu Lukaku though could start in the league for the first time since 16 October after his game-changing 45 minute contribution on Sunday.

He could form a front three with Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount, the latter is their top scorer this season with seven.

Callum Hudson-Odoi would therefore be on the bench where he’ll find Werner, Havertz and Hakim Ziyech; not bad options.

As for Brighton, they certainly don’t boast the same squad depth as their hosts but, with a tight turnaround, Graham Potter may still rotate.

Robert Sánchez though is the established first-choice goalkeeper, conceding just 15 times in 16 appearances this season.

At the back, Lewis Dunk is injured while Shane Duffy and Joël Veltman might be unavailable again after both missed the Brentford victory.

So, it’ll be a back four again with Adam Wesbter partnering Dan Burn.

Tariq Lamptey will continue at right-back; he made just three appearances for Chelsea, totalling 44 minutes, before joining the Seagulls.

In midfield, Yves Bissouma is back after missing the Boxing Day fixture due to yellow card accumulation.

This’ll be his penultimate game for Brighton before the Africa Cup of Nations; Mali’s first fixture is on 12 January against Tunisia.

Alongside for this one could be Enock Mwepu who’s national team, Zambia, failed to qualify for AFCON, despite winning the competition in 2012.

Further forward, Solly March could be rotated into the XI with Alexis Mac Allister likely to keep his place.

Although, Adam Lallana, fit again Pascal Groß, Steven Alzate and Jakub Moder are all viable midfield alternatives.

Leandro Trossard could be pushed wide-left but he, and centre-forward Neal Maupay, will be the main goal threats after both scored on Sunday.

Can Brighton beat the European Champions?
