Betting prediction: Chelsea 2 – 2 Southampton

The Pensioners welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for this Premier League match.

These two teams traded away wins when they faced each other last season. This included a 0-2 win for Southampton when they last met at Stamford Bridge back in December 2019. It brought an end to a run of 9 straight games without a win in this head-to-head for the Saints.

Chelsea have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 24 wins (or 57%) to Southampton’s 9, from their 42 encounters in the Premier League.

Interestingly though, Chelsea’s record at home isn’t as strong as away against Southampton. They have won only 47% of their home matches against Southampton, in all competitions.

Chelsea FC vs Southampton FC: What are the betting odds?

The Blues have failed to win at home to Southampton in each of their last two matches. Despite this, they start the day as huge favourites at 9/20 on.

Three of the last eight matches between these sides at Stamford Bridge have ended in a stalemate. Odds of 15/4 are available if you see Chelsea and Southampton cancelling each other out on Saturday.

The Saints won on their last visit to Stamford Bridge back on Boxing Day of 2019. Despite this, they start the match as underdogs at odds of 11/2.

Chelsea FC vs Southampton FC: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Chelsea 2 – 2 Southampton is available at odds of 16/1.

Chelsea’s last home victory over Southampton in the Premier League came nearly 3 years ago back in December 2017 by a scoreline of 1-0. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 17/2.

Southampton won 0-2 on their last visit to Stamford Bridge was back in December 2019. You can back them at 33/1 for the same scoreline here on Saturday.

Chelsea vs Southampton has been a low scoring game recently at Stamford Bridge with each of the last three matches being under 2.5 goals games. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday with odds of 11/8 for under 2.5 goals.

Timo Werner (above) has so far drawn a blank in the Premier League with zero goals in four appearances. However, after a good showing on Tuesday in the Nations League against Switzerland, scoring one and creating another, Chelsea will be hoping he can carry that form into the Premier League for them. The German international is favourite to score at 8/11 on against Southampton.

Danny Ings has picked up right where he left off last campaign, with three Premier League goals already this season. This includes the only goal of the game in his last away match at Burnley. Ings is the favourite of those in red & white to get on the scoresheet at 13/10. You can back the 28-year-old at 5/1 to grab the game’s opening goal.

Chelsea FC vs Southampton FC: Match preview

The big question before every Chelsea match this season is which Chelsea side is going to turn up on the given day.

Despite their opening day win against Brighton, they were perhaps lucky to get the three points. Brighton created three times as many chances as Chelsea on the day and probably deserved at least a point from their performance, if not all three.

Chelsea then showed far too much respect to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool beat the Blues 2-0.

Then there was the Chelsea of the first half against West Brom that was error-prone and capitulated to give the Baggies a 3-0 lead. Or, there was the Chelsea that came out fighting in the 2nd half to turn a certain defeat into a point.

Then we have the Chelsea of last weekend, that had far too much quality for Crystal Palace, completely steamrollering their fellow Londoners while not giving them a sniff of goal at the other end.

In many ways, Chelsea’s performances this season has been a microcosm for the Premier League post-restart. Wildly unpredictable performances and results. Teams capable of putting a team to the sword one week, and suffering a complete collapse the next.

Of course, the other way to look at Chelsea this season is simply ‘gradual improvement’. Something that is to be expected of an expensively assembled group of players who are still getting to know each other. Especially with a reduced pre-season and little to no training time between matches in this condensed season.

Ralph Hasenhüttl is a very good and experienced coach. And his side is more than capable of winning here if Chelsea are anything less than prepared and focused on the task at hand on Saturday. But if the Chelsea we saw against Crystal Palace turns up, they will probably have too much quality for Southampton to handle.

Chelsea FC team news vs Southampton FC

The only deadline-day business of Chelsea was to see Ruben Loftus-Cheek leave the club on loan to Fulham.

Billy Gilmour is still ruled out with a knee injury. Lampard explained recently that he could still be out for another month or so.

“He’s progressing well. It was forecast as a four-month injury when he went into surgery and we’re three months on from that so it will be four weeks from now barring any hiccups.”
– Frank Lampard, Chelsea Manager

Ben Chilwell (above) made a successful return from injury in Chelsea’s last game, scoring against Crystal Palace. He was struggling with plantar fasciitis – a type of pain flareup of the heel – after the match. Marcos Alonso will be ready to step in for him if he doesn’t recover in time.

Edouard Mendy also made his Premier League debut for Chelsea against Palace. Like Chilwell, he has struggled with an injury over the international break. Should he not recover from his thigh injury in time, Kepa looks likely to step in for him.

Christian Pulisic made a 7-minute cameo against Palace just before the international break. Lampard is unlikely to rush him back to starting games after his hamstring injury. Therefore, expect him to come on from the bench here for the final half-hour.

Theo Walcott

Southampton FC team news vs Chelsea FC

The Saints were one of the busiest clubs on deadline-day, albeit seeing more outs than ins.

Theo Walcott (above) returning to Southampton on loan, having left at 16-years-old to join Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, was the big news at St Mary’s on deadline day.

However, they also saw numerous players depart including Sofiane Boufal and Guido Carrillo, both of whom agreed to have their contracts terminated. They have joined Angers in Ligue 1 and Spanish side Elche respectively.

Centre-back Wesley Hoedt returned to Lazio on a season-long loan, with an option to buy. Hoedt was signed from the Italian club back in 2017 but failed to establish himself at the Saints.

Christoph Klarer also left the club, making a permanent move from Southampton to German side Fortuna Dusseldorf. The 20-year-old Austrian centre-back was signed from Rapid Wien back in 2016 but never featured for the Saints in the Premier League.

Sam McQueen and Mohamed Salisu are still on the long-term injury list for Southampton.

Stuart Armstrong will also be unavailable for this match due to the Coronavirus. Nathan Redmond is expected to replace him on the wing.
