Burnley vs Manchester United: Premier League preview
Manchester United have the chance to move to the summit of the Premier League table when they face Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.
Manchester United head into the match level on 33 points with leaders Liverpool, although their Merseyside rivals have a superior goal difference. Crucially, however, Manchester United have a game in hand over the current champions.
Man United were knocked out of semi-finals of the EFL Cup in midweek, losing 1-0 at home to rivals Manchester City. The Red Devils returned to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 home win over Watford in the FA Cup on Saturday. Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game very early on.
Burnley required a 90th-minute equaliser from Matej Vydra to force their third round tie against MK Dons to extra time and a penalty shootout, which the Clarets eventually won.
Burnley are unbeaten in their last five matches at Turf Moor, winning three on the spin.
Manchester United’s excellent away form
Manchester United have the most points per game away from home in the Premier League, winning six and drawing one of their seven away matches. United have also scored a league-high 21 goals on the road, despite playing one or two away matches fewer than everyone else.
Burnley’s home form ranks 16th in the league, with three wins and a draw from seven matches at Turf Moor. As average as the Clarets have been this season, they do boast the joint-best home defensive record in the entire league along with Manchester City (7 goals conceded).
Burnley are 16th in the table on 16 points – five points above the relegation zone. The Clarets have two games in hand over three of the sides below them.
Burnley and Manchester United have faced each other 12 times in the Premier League. United have won half of those matches, drawing a further four, and losing two.
The two sides’ most recent meeting ended in a shock 2-0 win for Burnley at Old Trafford in January 2020. Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez scored Burnley’s goals either side of the break.

Burnley team news vs Manchester United
Sean Dyche will be hoping to have Charlie Taylor and Jay Rodriguez available. The duo face late fitness tests ahead of Tuesday’s kick-off.
Dwight McNeil was not risked against MK Dons and should be on Burnley’s bench against United. Jimmy Dunne is likely to miss out with a knock.
Nick Pope will return to goal after being given a rest at the weekend.
Phil Bardsley is one of a few former Manchester United players in the Clarets’ squad, along with Robbie Brady. Josh Brownhill, Jimmy Dunne, and Dwight McNeil were also members of Man United’s academy at one stage.

Manchester United team news vs Burnley
Edinson Cavani is available again after completing his three-match suspension and is expected to lead Manchester United’s attack.
Paul Pogba is an injury concern for Tuesday. The World Cup-winning midfielder missed the game against Watford through injury.
Eric Bailly was forced off against Watford due to a neck injury, although fortunately the Côte d’Ivoire international did not suffer a concussion. Victor Lindelof is another fitness concern, potentially leaving United short of numbers in defence. Axel Tuanzebe could partner Harry Maguire at centre-back.
David de Gea, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were unused substitutes on Saturday and should be recalled to the starting eleven.
Luke Shaw remains doubtful, so Alex Telles could keep his place at left-back.
Facundo Pellistri has tested positive for Covid-19 so he’ll have to wait a while longer to make his Manchester United debut.
Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are long-term absentees.
