Brighton vs Southampton: Match preview
Brighton welcome Southampton to the Amex Stadium on Sunday.
Brighton held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the Amex last weekend. The match had it all pretty much: a penalty miss, disallowed goals, injuries, and a stoppage-time equaliser.
Graham Potter’s side required a 93rd-minute penalty from Pascal Gross to equalise, and the point was nothing less than Brighton deserved. In fact, they were mightly unlucky not to take the lead in the first half. However, wins are what Brighton need at the moment. The Seagulls are 16th in the table on 10 points, four points above the relegation zone.
Southampton’s seven-match unbeaten run came to a dramatic end last weekend. The Saints blew a 2-0 lead at home to Manchester United, eventually losing the game 3-2. Jan Bednarek and James Ward-Prowse initially gave Southampton the lead.
Brighton are one of just two teams in the Premier League yet to win a match at home this season. The Seagulls have drawn three and lost two of their five home matches, scoring five and conceding eight.
Southampton’s away form ranks 10th in the division, with two wins, two draws, and one loss from their five away games. They have scored nine and conceded eight from those games.
Southampton and Brighton have faced each other six times in Premier League history, with Brighton failing to win any of those matches.
The two sides last met in July in a 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s, with goals from Neal Maupay and Danny Ings.
Southampton won 2-0 in their last trip to the Amex in August 2019. Florin Andone was sent off before Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Redmond netted for the visitors.
Brighton team news vs Southampton
Tariq Lamptey is available again after serving a one-match suspension last weekend.
Former Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana will be out for the next couple of weeks after following a groin injury picked up against Liverpool – another one of his former sides. Lallana came on as a substitute but only lasted 7 minutes before being subbed off himself.
Neal Maupay was another casualty from last weekend’s defeat at Anfield. The striker seemed to pick up a hamstring injury and is a major doubt for Monday evening. Leandro Trossard should return to the starting eleven in place of Maupay.
Alexis Mac Allister is another doubt after testing positive for Covid-19 earlier in November, although the Argentine has now returned to training.
Davy Propper has returned to training but is unlikely to be available for Monday. Due to injury, Propper has been limited to just two Carabao Cup appearances all season.
Florin Andone remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury, while Monday is likely to come too soon for Jose Izquierdo and Christian Walton.
Southampton team news vs Brighton
Danny Ings is a doubt for the Saints with a knee injury.
Speaking on Ings’ availability, Hasnhuttl said: “We must have a look. Yesterday, first time training with the team, looks good. We must look how his body reacts to the training, then we can say more”.
Will Smallbone will be assessed ahead of kickoff, while Nathan Redmond is expected to be out for a further week or so with a hamstring injury.
Mohamed Salisu has returned to training but is not yet fit to play.
