Brighton vs Southampton betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions & odds

Falmer Stadium has been a good hunting ground for the Saints. They have won on each of their last four visits here in all competitions. Brighton are still waiting for a first-ever win in front of their own fans against the Saints in Premier League action.

Matches between them have invariably ended in a stalemate though, with five of the nine Premier League meetings ending in a draw. The most common result has been a 1-1 draw with four of the five draws between them ending with this scoreline.

Therefore, 101 Great Goals’ prediction for this match is Brighton 1 - 1 Southampton and is available at odds of 6.5/1.

Match preview

Brighton & Hove Albion welcomes Southampton to the Falmer Stadium on Sunday for this Premier League match.

With the teams on 40 and 39 points respectively without any fears of relegation or a real possibility of qualifying for Europe, you would be forgiven for thinking this is a ‘dead rubber’ between two sides who will finish comfortably in mid-table regardless of the outcome.

However, Ralph Hasenhüttl will be wanting a strong finish to the season having lost six of the last eight games as a manager. It is the sort of run where questions will start being asked of his ability as a coach should it continue into the summer and possibly leave the club reviewing his position after even a few bad results at the start of the next season.

Graham Potter is in a similar situation having just come out of a run of six straight defeats. A strong showing to end the season will indicate this was a temporary form issue rather than a deep-rooted problem within in squad or tactical set-up that needs addressing. Also, on a personal level, his name is frequently linked with the top managerial jobs and a strong run to end the season would keep his name firmly in mind for any big jobs that open up over the summer months.

Both clubs will also need to strengthen over the summer and we will likely see a goal scorer high on the shopping lists of both clubs. A strong run of form to end the season will indicate a club that is on the rise when selling it to potential new recruits not to mention every Premier League position in the final table being worth a few million pounds to help cover the summer spending sprees.

After a disappointing result for each in midweek, coupled with a short turnaround time between games, it is possible both teams may be feeling it physically and mentally at this point in a long hard season. It may be difficult for both to reach the intensity in terms of their pressing game that they are used to. Motivation may also be an issue for some players too. This all leaves us to believe this could be a somewhat disappointing game and likely finishes with under 2.5 goals in the end.

Neal Maupay Goalscorer. - Maupay (pictured below) rescued a point for the Seagulls in Southampton back in December with a last gasp injury-time equaliser. The Brighton forward is the 5/1 favourite to score the final goal of the game again on Sunday. Or 2.5/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Southampton.

Brighton team news

Tudor Baluta remains on the long term injury list due to an ankle problem that has plagued him all season resulting in him missing out on every matchday squad so far. Jakub Moder likely won’t feature for the club again in 2022. The versatile midfielder suffered an ACL injury in their match against Norwich earlier this month.

Yves Bissouma misses this match also as the second game of his suspension having accumulated ten yellow cards this season. However, Leandro Trossard is likely to return here having missed the City match due to a 24-hour illness. Steven Alzate and Shane Duffy both face a late fitness test having been out lately due to a virus and a thigh problem respectively.

Southampton team news

Alex McCarthy is the only injury doubt coming into this one. He is back in training now and on the way back to building up his fitness. However, having missed more than half of the season it is touch and go whether he can win back the #1 jersey from Fraser Forster in the remaining games.

Nathan Tella hasn’t played a lot of football lately due to a groin problem. He was an unused substitute once again against Burnley and he will be hoping to break back into the side here. He likely won’t be alone either, with a number of changes expected to be made to the side that looked so lost against Burnley, particularly in an abject first half. Ché Adams, Tino Livramento and Mohammed Salisu are three who will almost certainly come back into the starting eleven here.
