Brighton vs Leeds United betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Leeds United continues to enjoy life in the Premier League this season under Marcelo Bielsa after their return to the English top-flight, with many suggesting that there is still more to come from the Elland Road outfit under the Argentine's regime. They travel to Brighton to square off against Graham Potter's Seagulls, who need to get back to winning ways if they are to avoid a late battle to avoid relegation.

Betting prediction: Brighton 1-1 Leeds United

Leeds United come into their away fixture at Brighton on the back of some good form of late, going undefeated in their last six (3-3-0) while picking up some very credible results against Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United along the way. Host-side Brighton, however, has not picked up a win in their last four (2 in their last six), and are looking to bounce back after a very disappointing defeat against relegated Sheffield United. The form chart points to a three-point haul for Leeds, but Brighton remains tricky to break down as evidenced by a pair of recent 0-0 draws against both Chelsea and Everton. A draw could be on here.

Brighton vs Leeds United: Recommended bets

To Score Anytime: Jack Harrison

It is hard to look at this fixture and look beyond Patrick Bamford adding to his 14-goals in the Premier League this season, but the stubborn nature of Brighton’s three center-back deployments in conjunction with the continued absence of Raphinha means that Bamford’s supply could be considerably reduced. Jack Harrison could be a good shout for stepping into the light here, considering he is joint-second in the side in goals (7) with Stuart Dallas. If he can get between the lines and cause trouble, he should be a potential goal threat.

Winning Margin: Scoring Draw

This is a bit risky considering Brighton’s struggle for goals throughout the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign, but the Seagulls still generate just about the same number of shots per game (13.1) as Leeds United (13.5). Leeds is certainly the side that is in form by comparison, but Brighton could sneak a goal against a Leeds outfit that – while improved at the back in recent weeks – has still allowed 50-goals this season.

Brighton vs Leeds United: Match preview

It has been the biggest criticism levied against Graham Potter and his Brighton side all season long; a lack of goals and a lack of solid options a center forward. One certainly causes the other, however, especially when you take into account the chances that the Seagulls do create. At current, they are in the same chance-creation bracket as Saturday’s opponent Leeds United, yet Marcelo Bielsa’s men are comfortably ahead of Potters outfit in terms of goal output – 50 to 33 – with only one reliable center forward in the squad. And that is the true difference.

And there is no disrespect intended to be thrown in the direction at Neal Maupay either. The former Brentford and French youth international forward has been a serviceable option for Potter this season, but his goal output has not been at a level commensurate with the chances that fall to him week-in week-out. Some have suggested that the Versailles-native would be better suited to a second-striker role in tandem with a more efficient center-forward given his work off the ball and decent mobility; attributes which ironically are also well-suited to the tactical schematics that Potter has deployed this term.

But unfortunately for many on the south coast, hopes of investment and reinforcement for a player to lead the line in a more effective manner than Maupay may not come to pass, according to some. With Brighton expecting to receive bids for highly-touted midfielder Yves Bissouma and possibly young wing-back Tariq Lamptey this summer, the funds could certainly be available for Brighton to fix their most glaring deficiency. Some – myself included – are of the opinion that a better forward would have them sitting in the top half rather than being just outside of relegation. Things could really fall off the rails if Potter’s gaze is turned to the managerial vacancy at Tottenham, which could constitute a severe blow to the club’s current long-term plans. Still very much a canvas that is far from finished, Brighton may not be in a position to finish what they have started before having to take it back to the drawing board in what is ramping up to be a rather pivotal summer for the Amex outfit.

Leeds United can become the best of the rest if transfer success continues

There is no denying the body of work that Marcelo Bielsa has logged since taking up his post on the Elland Road touchline in 2018-19. Taking a Leeds United outfit that finished 13th the season before, immediately pushing them up to 3rd in his first season, and then the long-awaited promotion back to the Premier League in 2019-20, Bielsa has become an immediate legendary figure in Yorkshire before a single ball was kicked in the Premier League this season. Now, with Leeds sitting in the top half of the table with just five matches remaining, there is barely a single supporter that would say anything against the Argentine headmaster and how he has pushed the club back to where many feel it is rightfully placed.

So much has been said about the high-octane, silky football that Leeds United is capable of under the Rosario-native. But perhaps not enough is being made of the work the club has done in the transfer market during its first season back in the English top flight. Together with Director of Football Victor Orta, Bielsa has had a massive influence on how the club has conducted itself in the market with some spectacular results. Business conducted for Rodrigo, Diego Llorente, Raphinha, Hélder Costa, Robin Koch, Illan Meslier, and the re-upping of Jack Harrison’s loan from Manchester City, has arguably been the best of any club in the Premier League this season. And Leeds looks to be ramping up for similar in the coming summer.

The club has been linked with a host of targets with a view of pushing the club forward during the 2021-22 campaign and the hope of avoiding a sophomore slump. Reports of opening discussions with young Georgian and Ruben Kazan winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (who is sought after by Bayern Munich) are added to links with interest in Glasgow Rangers’ Ryan Kent, Udinese’s Rodrigo De Paul, Ajax’s Nicolás Tagliafico, and PSV Eindhoven’s Noni Madueke. Having already spent over 100m-pounds since their Premier League return, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to the clubs’ ability to improve via the market. Should Leeds finish the season in the top half, and a similarly successful summer be undertaken, there is a real chance Leeds could challenge for Europe.

Brighton team news vs Leeds United

Graham Potter remains without two central figures when Brighton host Leeds United on Saturday. Tariq Lamptey and Solly March both remain sidelined.

Ben White is back from suspension, but the Seagulls are likely to also be without both Florin Andone and Percy Tau.

Adam Lallana is also listed as a doubt.

Leeds United team news vs Brighton

Marcelo Bielsa will remain without the talismanic figure of Raphinha, who is still sidelined via injury.

Rodrigo is confirmed to be back in the fold, but will only make the team from the bench this time around.

Liam Cooper is serving the last match of a three-match ban, Adam Forshaw remains out, and Hélder Costa is touch-and-go in the build-up. If fit, he should start in Raphinha’s stead.
