After a positive first season in charge, the pressure is on Frank Lampard to challenge for the Premier League title following a mammoth transfer window. It’ll be important for the Blues to get off to a good start.

Brighton, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, will be targeting a slightly higher finish this year.

Despite Chelsea missing many of their new additions, they should still be too strong for the Seagulls.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Match preview

Brighton host Chelsea at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday night.
Chelsea finished 4th last season, while the Seagulls finished 15th – seven points above the relegation zone. They only managed nine wins all season.
Brighton drew both of their official friendly matches in the off-season. In fact, one of them was at home to Chelsea. That match ended 1-1, with Werner and Pascal Gross (penalty) netting the goals. The other game finished 0-0 against West Brom.
The Brighton game was Chelsea’s only official friendly. Although they did have an extended end to last season with the FA Cup final and their Champions League game against Bayern Munich.
These two sides have met six times in the Premier League. Chelsea have won five and drawn one of those matches.
In fact, the Blues are unbeaten in their last 13 games against Brighton. The Seagulls have only ever recorded one win over Chelsea in their history, back in 1933.
Their last Premier League meeting also ended in a 1-1 draw at the Amex in January. Cesar Azpilicueta gave Chelsea an early lead before Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored an incredible overhead kick to equalise.

Brighton team news vs Chelsea

Graham Potter is confident that Davy Propper will pass a late fitness test, although he’s unlikely to play the full 90 minutes.

Neal Maupay is expected to lead Brighton’s attack. Summer signing Adam Lallana could start, with Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard either side of him.

Ben White, who has been heavily involved with a move away from the Amex, is expected to start in defence.

Christian Walton is out with an ankle injury while Jose Izquierdo is a long-term absentee.

Former Chelsea academy defender Tariq Lamptey could also be involved.

Chelsea team news vs Brighton

Mateo Kovacic will miss out through suspension following his red card in the FA Cup final. N’Golo Kante, who has recently been linked with a move to Italy, should start in midfield alongside Jorginho.

Newboy Timo Werner is expected to start up front, meaning Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham will have to settle for a place on the bench. Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi could start out wide.

Blues fans will have to wait a little longer to see Hakim Ziyech, who picked up a knock in a recent friendly against Brighton. Ben Chilwell has recovered from an ankle injury, but remains unavailable due to lack of match fitness.

Thiago Silva is unlikely to be involved as he only begins training with his new side on Saturday due to being in quarantine.

Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta have both recovered from hamstring injuries which forced them off at Wembley in August.

Reece James withdrew from the recent England Under-21 squad but is available to start on Tuesday.

Fikayo Tomori is also in contention to make the matchday, despite being heavily linked with a loan move to Everton.

Billy Gilmour remains a long-term absentee and could return to the training pitch in October.
