Brighton & Hove Albion vs Brentford: Match preview
Will Brighton & Hove Albion end their winless run?
Last time out, almost two weeks ago, they were beaten 1-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Amex, with the goal coming in first half stoppage time.
It was a game reminiscent of last season, with the Seagulls winning the xG, 1.62- 0.93, but not scoring any actual, tangible goals.
That is Brighton’s only outing for 22 days as their two fixtures either side, against Tottenham and Man United, were postponed.
Both were as a result of Covid-19 outbreak in the opposition’s squad so, as far as we know, Brighton are largely virus free.
Unfortunately, they’ve also managed to steer clear of wins since September, drawing eight and losing the other three since then.
Nevertheless, the Seagulls are still 13th, nine points clear of any relegation trouble.
Also, Brighton are winless in 11 Boxing Day fixtures, last winning on 26 December in 2005 against QPR in front of 7,341 at the Withdean Stadium.
This is the longest winless Boxing Day run of any side currently in the Premier League of Football League.
Although, one of Brighton’s four wins this season did come against Brentford in mid-September.
The reverse fixture had the lowest total shots of any Premier League game this season, producing just 11: seven for Brentford and four for Brighton.
Despite an xG score of Brentford 0.71-0.19 Brighton, it was the the visitors who won won 1-0 thanks to Leandro Trossard’s last minute strike
Will the Seagulls down the Bees again?
Can Brentford win in Sussex by the Sea?
Brentford meanwhile kick off one place above their hosts due to their marginally superior goal difference: -1 compared to -3.
Thomas Frank’s side returned to action on Wednesday after their last two league games, against Manchester United and Southampton, hadn’t taken place.
In midweek, they welcomed Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, looking to reach the last four for a second successive season.
But, it was the European Champions who snuck through to the semis, winning 2-0 thanks to a pair of late goals.
First, the deadlock was broken by an unfortunate own goal by Pontus Jansson, smashing into his own net.
Five minutes later, goalkeeper Álvaro Fernández conceded a penalty which was duly dispatched.
Back in the Premier League, Brentford’s last match was a memorable, come from behind 2-1 victory over Watford.
In that one, Saman Ghoddos was brought down and then Bryan Mbeumo converting the subsequent spot-kick in the 96th minute.
That was just Brentford’s second win in nine matches but it means they spend Christmas Day comfortably in mid-table.
Unlike their hosts, the Bees have a very good record on 26 December.
They’ve only lost one of their last 12 outings on Boxing Day, a 4-2 home reverse against Ipswich Town seven years ago.
Also, they’ve never lost a top-flight match on this date, winning twice and drawing the other, although the last of which was a 2-1 win over Sheffield United in 1946.
Will Brentford win an away game for the first time since 3 October?
Brighton & Hove Albion team news vs Brentford
After an extended period without a game, Graham Potter’s side should be raring to go.
Robert Sánchez will continue in goal having missed just one Premier League game this season and that was due to suspension.
In defence though, there’s no Lewis Dunk or Adam Webster but Shane Duffy is back after serving his one-match suspension last time out.
So, he could return as part of a back three with Dan Burn and Joël Veltman either side.
Tariq Lamptey and Marc Cucurella do like to get forward so will enjoy a wing-back role if deployed in a back three.
In midfield, they are weakened though by the fact Yves Bissouma is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Wolves.
Brighton’s last 15 Premier League wins have all come with Bissouma in the side, last tasing victory without the him against Arsenal on 5 December 2019.
He might not play club football for a while as he’ll be off to AFCON after this game; Mali kick off their campaign on 12 January against Tunisia.
Enock Mwepu, who joined from RB Salzburg in the summer, will be the anchor for this game with Adam Lallana and Jakub Moder alongside.
Alexis Mac Allister, Solly March and Steven Alzate are the other options; Pascal Groß is injured.
In attack, top scorer Neal Maupay missed their last game but, as that was a while ago, he should be back for this one.
He’ll lead the attack alongside Leandro Trossard who got the winner at Brentford.
Maupay is looking to score in three successive Premier League appearances for the first time since October 2020.
Will he fire his team to a much needed win?
Brentford team news vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Brentford meanwhile will be hoping they’re not hampered by the fact they’ve had three days to prepare compared to Brighton’s 11.
With David Raya still injured, Álvaro Fernández will continue to deputise in goal.
In defence, Kristoffer Ajer and Mathias Jørgensen are long-term absentees but Ethan Pinnock did return after injury on Wednesday.
So, the Jamaican international is likely to start once more, alongside captain Pontus Jansson and Mads Bech Sørensen.
Pinnock’s return allows Vitaly Janelt to return to midfield where he joined Mathias Jensen and Shandon Baptiste in midweek.
If Frank wants to rotate in that area, Frank Onyeka and Christian Nørgaard are viable alternatives.
Sergi Canós will start at right-wing-back after serving his one-match suspension against Watford.
In attack, Ivan Toney returned to action off the bench on Wednesday having missed two games due to a positive Covid-19 test.
Here, he’ll surely start, alongside Bryan Mbeumo, with Yoane Wissa joining Marcus Forss on the bench.
