Betting prediction: Brentford 2 – 0 Watford

Brentford welcomes Watford to the Brentford Community Stadium in London on Friday for this Premier League match.

The Hornets have the upper hand in the head-to-head in the modern era, with 2 wins to Brentford’s 1, from their 4 encounters since 2014, all of which took place in the second tier of English football.

This will actually be the first meeting of the clubs in the top-flight of English football. All previous meetings dating back to 1921 took place in lower divisions, starting in Division Three South. The overall record in all competitions is 26 Watford wins to Brentford’s 21.

It will also be the first time these two managers have faced each other and the first time Claudio Ranieri has managed a side against Brentford in English football.

Brentford vs Watford: Recommended bets

The corresponding fixture between these sides in the Championship last season finished in a 2-0 win for Brentford. 101 Great Goals’ prediction for this match is Brentford 2 – 0 Watford once again and is available at odds of 11/1.

1-1 draw. The previous match to the above finished 1-1 at Watford. Odds of 7/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

1-2 Watford win. Watford have won 3 of the last 5 matches in this head-to-head by a 2-1 scoreline including 2 of their last 3 visits to Brentford. You can back them at 13/1 for the same scoreline here on Friday.

Under 2.5 goals. Both matches last season in this head-to-head finished as low-scoring games in the Championship with under 2.5 goals. You can back another low scoring game here on Friday with odds of 1.9/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Yoane Wissa Goalscorer. With Ivan Toney (below) out, Yoane Wissa is expected to lead the line here for the Bees. He has scored in his only 2 starts this season; both in the League Cup. He also has 2 goals in just 98 minutes of Premier League football, scoring in 2 of his 7 cameo appearances. The 25-year-old is the 6.5/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Friday. Or 2.75/1 to bag a goal at any time in his first Premier League start during the game against Watford.

Brentford vs Watford: Match preview

Those who have been following our previews for Brentford this season will have read about how their entire back-office focus is on underlying performance metrics rather than results. The belief that in a sport with so few scoring events – usually 0-3 goals per game – results can be very variance heavy. However, underlying performance metrics will tell you how many points your performances should be netting you over a bigger sample.

A dodgy penalty decision either way. A goalkeeper dropping a ball after getting bumped being called a foul or not. A red card for a bad tackle being given or not. We have seen games being decided by single events like these in just the last round of matches. Hence why results can be quite random and noisy at times. Why it is harder to predict the outcome of 1 game than how many points a team will roughly have at the end of the season. Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City may have all lost to West Ham but will likely all finish above them in the table.

So, it will be very concerning for Brentford right now that their underlying metrics are starting to tank as we head into a very busy part of the season.

Over the first 9 games this season, the Bees bettered their opponent’s expected goals in all games but one; West Ham away. That match came in at 1.37 to 1.30xG in the Hammers’ favour but Yoane Wissa’s injury-time goal gave Brentford the smash & grab 3 points.

Since then, the only match they really came out on top in in terms of xG was the Norwich match. In that match, 3 missed big chances from 4 yards out allowed Norwich to hold onto the lead they took inside the opening 30 minutes.

Brentford’s form over those opening 9 games this season was 1.33 points-per-game; equating to a 51-point season if extrapolated over 38 games. A run of games that included Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool, West Ham and Arsenal.

Over the last 6 matches, they have mostly faced teams that will be battling against relegation. Worryingly, the Londoners have been handing over points to sides they will need to finish above this season to make sure Premier League football isn’t a one-year thing.

They have picked up just 5 points from those 6 games; a points-per-game rate of 0.83 which would see them finish the season with just 32 points over a 38-game season. Relegation form.

Their declining xG will be the biggest concern for Thomas Frank and now that Ivan Toney is out with Covid-19, the two problems combined could prove a major obstacle for goals in this match. It was Toney after all that got on the scoresheet in both games against Watford last season.

Watford have their own list of absentees to contend with and are likewise in a bad run of form at the moment. This match could prove the perfect springboard for either of them to halt the current run of bad results.

Brentford team news vs Watford

Ivan Toney remains ruled out due to the Coronavirus. The forward missed the match against Leeds and is likely to also miss the midweek match against Manchester United.

Sergi Canos will miss this match due to suspension, having accumulated 5 yellow cards. This will likely see Mads Roerslev play on Brentford’s right flank with Yoane Wissa in the attack.

Kristoffer Ajer is ruled out for up to a month with a hamstring injury, effectively ruling the player out of the Christmas period of games.

David Raya remains out until at least March 2022 due to an injury to the PCL in his left knee. Álvaro Fernández will continue in goal in his absence.

Zanka has missed the last 4 games with a muscular problem and is being assessed week to week on his fitness. He remains unavailable for the Bees here.

Joshua Dasilva and Julian Jeanvier are also out with hip and knee injuries respectively that have seen them miss out on Brentford’s season so far.

Watford team news vs Brentford

Ben Foster has missed the last 3 games with a groin strain. A scan has revealed that he will likely be out of action until the new year.

Nicolas N’Koulou is in a near-identical situation with the thigh injury that caused him to miss the last 3 games.

Ismaila Sarr (above) has also missed the last 3 games with a knee ligament injury. He is out until the end of this month at least, at which time he will have another scan to assess the situation.

Adam Masina was withdrawn just 12 minutes into the 1-2 defeat against Chelsea with a thigh injury. An MRI will determine the extent of the injury but he certainly misses out here.

Peter Etebo remains on the long-term injury list having torn a quad muscle towards the end of the Newcastle game. He has had surgery to repair the damage and is expected to be out until around March 2022.

Kwadwo Baah is now also out due to a fractured ankle in training.

Francisco Sierralta has been working hard in the gym following a minor hamstring injury. This match likely comes too soon for him with the midweek matches a more realistic target for a potential return to play.

Ken Sema is nearing a return to action after an MCL injury sustained in training saw him miss the Hornets’ last 5 league games. He is back in full training with the squad and in contention for a place on the bench here.
