Brentford vs Manchester United: Match preview

Brentford vs Manchester United betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions and odds

Will it be another famous night at the Brentford Community Stadium?

This is Brentford’s first season back in the top-flight since 1946/47, that’s 74 years to be exact, but they look right at home in the Premier League.

Thomas Frank’s side were last in action on Friday night in a game that’ll be remembered forever by the home fans in attendance.

It certainly didn’t start well for them though, falling behind mid-way through the first half against Watford.

It then took until the 84th minute for them to get back on level terms when Vitaly Janelt’s cross was flicked on and bundled over the line by Pontus Jansson.

A lot of teams in this scenario would cling onto a potentially precious point but not Brentford, they pushed for a winner and were rewarded.

In the 94th minute, Saman Ghoddos dribbled into the box and was brought down: penalty!

Bryan Mbeumo shouldered the responsibility and, with the last kick of the night, calmly stole all three points for the hosts.

This sparked wild celebrations as the home fans enjoyed just their third home league win of the campaign.

Friday night’s three points moved Brentford up to tenth place in the table, a whopping nine points clear of danger.

Having also beaten Arsenal and Everton at home, can the Bees take an even bigger scalp and beat Manchester United for the first time since 1938?

Will Manchester United win again?

As for the visitors, the Ralf Rangnick revolution is up and running, if the plan involves winning games 1-0 that is.

In the German’s first match in interim charge, the Red Devils beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to Fred’s looping right-footed shot.

Then, on Saturday evening, they won by the same scoreline again, this time beating Norwich City at Carrow Road.

David de Gea was a key figure once more, saving five shots and preventing an xG of 2.1.

But, it was their superstar at the other end who proved to be the match winner.

With just 15 minutes to play, Cristiano Ronaldo was tugged to the floor before smashing home the subsequent penalty.

Having also beaten Arsenal 3-2, Manchester United have now won three successive Premier League games for the first time since September.

This lifts them up to fifth, just one point behind fourth-placed West Ham United.

Now, Manchester United will face Brentford in a league game for the first time since 1947 with only meeting since coming in a League Cup tie in 1975.

Sammy McIlroy and Lou Macari got the goals in a 2-1 win back then and the current Man United side would certainly settle for a similar scoreline 46 years on.

Will Manchester United’s momentum continue?

Thomas Frank’s squad isn’t at full strength right now, including in goal where Dvid Raya is set to be out for three months with a knee injury.

So, inexperienced Spaniard Álvaro Fernández, who’s on loan from second division side Huesca, will continue to deputise.

At the back, they’re also short of options with Kristoffer Ajer, Ethan Pinnock and Mathias Jørgensen all unavailable.

This means club captain and Friday night goalscorer Pontus Jansson becomes an even more vitally important.

Alongside will be Charlie Goode with midfielder by trade Vitaly Janelt completing the back three.

Despite the lack of natural centre-backs, Frank will not deviate away from his 3-5-2 shape.

At wing-back, Sergi Canós was suspended on Friday night having picked up five yellow cards but will return, displacing Mads Roerslev.

In the middle, Frank Onyeka could return in place of Shandon Baptiste, alongside Mathias Jensen and Christian Nørgaard.

Josh Dasilva is a long-term absentee.

Up front, Ivan Toney has been a key figure for Brentford, scoring 37 goals in just 62 league appearances since joining from Peterborough United.

However, he tested positive for Covid-19 so has missed Brentford’s last two games, against Leeds and Watford.

So, based on the UK’s Covid-19 guideline, he’s unlikely to be out of self-isolation in time for this one.

This’ll see Yoane Wissa partner Friday night’s hero Bryan Mbeumo in attack; Marcus Forss is the other option.

Will it be a famous night for the home side?

Ralf Rangnick’s team meanwhile may be disrupted by a reported Covid-19 outbreak that prevented training on Sunday.

Thus, all team news is subject to any potential positive tests that may be returned by unknown players.

David de Gea remains a vitally important figure in goal; he’s saved 68 of the 99 shots he’s faced this season (68.7%).

In defence, Raphaël Varane hasn’t featured since going of in the UEFA Nations League Final in mid-October.

Also, Victor Lindelöf hobbled off at Norwich on Saturday so is a major doubt for this game.

Thus, Eric Bailly, who came on in Norfolk, will start here alongside Harry Maguire.

Phil Jones could make his first appearance since a 6-0 win at Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup 688 days ago.

Full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw were seemingly undroppable under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

But, these days, Alex Telles and Diogo Dalot are getting their opportunities under the new Head Coach.

While the back four is generally conventional, the overall formation certainly isn’t from an English perspective.

Rangnick has deployed the Red Bull style 4-2-2-2 since taking over so that’s likely to continue here.

This has though featured the often maligned Scott McTominay and Fred partnership at the base of midfield.

Further forward, Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho, who’s yet to get going since arriving from Dortmund, are used in slightly wider number ten roles.

Fernandes, Fred and McTominay are all one yellow card away from a ban.

If any of these players are out due to Covid-19, there are great back-up options including Donny van de Beek, Nemanja Matić and Jesse Lingard.

In attack, Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 13 goals this season from just 1,490 minutes on the field.

Ronaldo is given a strike partner in this shape and that could continue to be Marcus Rashford, although it would be no surprise if Mason Greenwood came in.

Will Manchester United win a fourth consecutive Premier League match?
