Brentford to win and BTTS – 14/5

Leeds will have to go for it at the Brentford Community Stadium so it would be a surprise if there were not goals, but with only Norwich conceding more than the Peacocks, they will likely be as vulnerable at the back as they are aggressive at the front.

The Brazilian is sure to leave Leeds after this game, but he looks more determined than ever to go out on his own terms. Expect him to do everything to try and inspire Leeds to victory.

Match preview

It feels as though everything that could have gone wrong for Leeds in recent weeks, has done, and left them in a position where their Premier League survival is out of their hands going into the final day of the season.

After a last-gasp Pascal Struijk goal dragged them out of the bottom three with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton, there were hopes that they might just survive the drop but Everton’s dramatic comeback and win against Crystal Palace and a dogged point for Burnley at Villa Park on Thursday have put the pressure back on the Whites.

With a far inferior goal difference, Leeds need to better Burnley’s result on the final day to escape relegation and if recent history is anything to go by at Brentford, that looks like a huge ask.

The two teams have had somewhat parallel paths in recent years and enjoyed a competitive rivalry, but the standout statistic – that Leeds fans are well aware of – is that they haven’t won away at Brentford since 1950 (albeit there was a 50-year gap in fixtures).

Their last visit to the old Griffin Park ended in a 1-1 draw that proved vital to Leeds’ eventual promotion, and it could take something similar to save their season.

However Brentford are a different side this season to previously, with Christian Eriksen a cut above his teammates and posing a real threat to any opposition defence, let alone the second-leakiest defence in the league.

Pontus Jansson will lead the Bees out against the side he made his name for in England and has made no secret of his continuing support for, and a potential battle with Patrick Bamford could be the key to deciding this game.

Bamford has been plagued by injury this year but has trained most of the week and is in better shape than his previous aborted comeback six weeks ago according to Jesse Marsch.

If he is fit enough to lead the line – even if only for 45 minutes – it could provide a shot in the arm for Leeds and their supporters, and the hope will be that he can inspire them to a memorable last day escape.

Brentford FC team news

Thomas Frank has the same set of players to pick from as he did in the win over Everton, with Ethan Pinnock still not quite ready to return to action.

Frank Onyeka is back in training and could make the bench, but Saman Ghoddos is another who will not be available.

Leeds United team news

Patrick Bamford has trained with Leeds all week and could be a huge boost after another six months out, but Jesse Marsch will make a late call on the striker.

Tyler Roberts has also returned to training but won’t be available, and with Luke Ayling undergoing knee surgery to rule him out for up to four months he joins Adam Forshaw and Stuart Dallas as long-term absentees while Dan James is still suspended.
