Bournemouth vs Cardiff Premier League match preview
The opening weekend of the 2018/19 Premier League season sees Bournemouth welcome new boys Cardiff City to the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.
Cardiff return to the Premier League for the first time following their relegation in 2014. The Blue Birds gained automatic promotion into the Premier League as runners-up in the Championship last season, finishing nine points behind winners Wolves.
Bournemouth enjoyed wins over Levante and Marsielle in pre-season, as well as a 1-1 draw against Sevilla. Josh King was the Cherries’ standout player, scoring four and assisting one.
Overall, Bournemouth finished pre-season with a record of three wins, two draws and two defeats.
Cardiff had a less intense pre-season, with matches agains Tavistock, Bodmin Town and Torquay United which are unlikely to tell us much about the side.
In their sixth and final match, Cardiff lost 2-1 to Real Betis. Daryl Murphy top scored for Warnock’s side with five goals.
Back in the big time
It’s been a relatively underwhelming transfer window for both sides.
Cardiff have spent close to £30m in the summer window, bringing in Greg Cunningham, Josh Murphy, Bobby Reid and Alex Smithies from the lower divisions. Real Betis midfielder Victor Camarasa joins on loan.
Cardiff’s signings pale in comparison (at least on paper) to those of their fellow promoted sides, making them the bookies’ favourites to get relegated this season.
The signing of defensive midfielder Jefferson Lerma from Levante broke Bournemouth’s transfer record. David Brooks signed from Sheffield United.
