The Villains welcome Wolves to Villa Park in Birmingham on Saturday for this Premier League match.

While this is a local derby, it was never really considered a real rivalry until recent times. Both teams having bigger rivals in Birmingham and West Brom respectively.

However, for younger fans and particularly on social media, a rivalry has developed lately between the two fanbases due to them identifying each other as their biggest local competitor.

Over those last 5 years, with the clubs competing for promotion from the Championship and now for places in the Premier League table, Wolves have had the slight upper-hand. They have won 2 out of 3 Premier League clashes between them and have 4 wins to Villa’s 3 in all competitions.

Although, Villa won the last match between them earlier this season, in Wolverhampton.

Aston Villa vs Wolves: What are the betting odds?

Villa beat Wolves 0-1 at the Molineux Stadium when the sides met earlier this season. They are the 5/4 favourites to complete a league double over Wolves on Saturday.

Wolves were the 0-1 winners the last time these sets met at Villa Park back in June. However, they have only 1 away win in their last 9 matches in the Premier League. This sees them start the match as the 11/5 underdogs.

Aston Villa vs Wolves: Match preview

Since becoming Premier League sides in the summers of 2019 and 2018 respectively, matches between these sides have always been close and settled by a single goal.

Both sides registered 2-1 home wins in this fixture in 2019. They followed this up by swapping 0-1 away wins in 2020.

As a result, this will make the first goal of this match absolutely crucial, with the scorer of it going on to win the match in each of the last 7 games between these sides.

This is particularly true of Aston Villa who have the best record in the Premier League of all teams once ahead, picking up 2.8 points per game from winning positions. They have won 12 of the 13 matches which they have taken the lead this season. The 3-2 defeat at Burnley being the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record.

In contrast, Aston Villa are the worst side in the Premier League at regaining points once they have fallen behind. They have fallen behind on 11 occasions this season and only managed to regain a point on one occasion; the 1-1 draw at Chelsea at the end of December.

Their 0.09 points per game (PPG) from a losing position is considerably worse than even the 3 sides in the relegation zone; Fulham (0.15 PPG), Sheffield United (0.18 PPG) and West Brom (0.33 PPG).

Wolves have dropped points in 3 games in which they have taken the lead this season, which puts them 11th in terms of PPG from a winning position with 2.36.

However, they have turned around 7 of 18 games they were losing, picking up 13 points (or 0.72 PPG) from losing positions this season. Only Manchester United, Leicester, Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham have a better record in games in which they fell behind.

Aston Villa team news vs Wolves

Wesley has missed over 14 months of football due to an ACL injury. He is back in full contact training but may require U23 appearances to get back some match sharpness before we see him again in the Premier League.

Kortney Hause has yet to be involved for Villa in 2021 due to an ankle injury. He is nearing a return though and has been involved in light training in recent weeks.

Matty Cash is continuing his recovery from a hamstring injury having missed Villa’s last 3 games. Similar to Hause, he is involved in training but not yet the ball work and contact parts of sessions. He should be expected back in the coming weeks.

Jack Grealish has also missed Villa’s last 3 matches due to a shin injury. He is still feeling pain when making certain movements and therefore is still unable to train properly. He could make a surprise appearance on the bench here, but the match against Newcastle would be a more realistic target.

Wolves team news vs Aston Villa

Raul Jimenez has been out since the end of November having suffered a horrific head injury against Arsenal. The club are being careful not to set targets or rush the player back to action. However, the news coming out of the club is all positive and he should be back in action for Wolves soon.

“We are following the right protocols, with no rush, but delighted that Raul is getting better and better day by day – it’s fantastic for us.”
– Nuno Espírito Santo, Wolverhampton Wanderers Manager

Azerbaijan international striker Renat Dadashov signed in the summer on loan from Grasshopper Zurich. He suffered an ACL injury shortly after the joining the club and is yet to make an appearance so far.

Daniel Podence has missed the last 5 matches due to a torn groin. He is expected to be out until April with the injury.

Fernando Marcal has also missed the last 2 matches with a groin problem that required surgery. He is expected back before Podence though but this match will come too early in his recovery.

Willy Boly has had a rough start to 2021, with two separate spells out of the side already due to injury. He was on the bench against City as an unused substitute in midweek; the first squad he has been named in after 4 matches out. He could start here in place of Leander Dendoncker.
