Betting prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham

Recent results for Aston Villa’s meetings with West Ham United (0-2-1) lean towards a potential Hammers result.

But the data behind the current Premier League season overall is in favour of Villa, who boast a considerably better goal difference, and a backline that is far more difficult to crack.

Both should be gunning for three points as each side harbour European aspirations this season.

Full-Time Result: Aston Villa

This should be an incredibly close one to call, and recent results between the two reflect that. But it’s hard to see West Ham continue their rich vein of recent form without a bit of a downturn in results, and Aston Villa have enough to perpetrate that.

Winning Margin: Aston Villa +1

Three of the last five meetings between these two sides saw a draw as the final result come full-time, while West Ham’s 2-1 win over Villa earlier this season featured a result that perhaps flattered the Hammers. Villa could see the reverse result as the home side this time around.

Aston Villa vs West Ham: Match preview

Going undefeated in your final-four matches to save your skin from failing to avoid the drop in your first season back in the Premier League is the stuff dreams are made of. For Aston Villa, it was almost a second-spell of heartbreak after slipping down into the Championship after a poor 2015-16. But this Villa-side are different; refreshing.

Dean Smith and the Villa hierarchy have presided over a recruitment process this season that has gone a long way to propelling the Birmingham-based outfit from potential relegation candidates into the dog fight for Europe. What has been so important for Smith and company is the notion that they’re now so much more than Jack Grealish.

The Birmingham-born and raised academy product is indeed the lifeblood of the club, but a very credible supporting cast has been built around him with expert precision. Ross Barkley, Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traoré, Matty Cash, Emiliano Martinez, and now Morgan Sanson have all been brought to Villa Park during the 2020-21 season. Though Sanson is a recent January arrival, the aforementioned quintet of signings have all been superb this term, and have genuinely made Villa a threat in all areas of the pitch.

As they go into a key-clash against another overachieving-side in West Ham, Villa’s ability to generate chances during the run of play via their more expressive players should come to the fore once again for Smith. After feeling unjustly done against the Hammers earlier this season, setting the record straight would push them back into Europa League contention and level on points with David Moyes’ men.

Return to winning ways proves West Ham are more than a flash in the pan

Despite falling to a resurgent Liverpool 3-1 at home at the weekend, West Ham should remain confident that the loss is nothing more than a blip on the radar. At current, the Hammers are still residing in the top-three of the Premier League form table, taking thirteen points from a possible eighteen in their last six outings.

Much like Aston Villa last term, the Hammers themselves have rebounded incredibly well after a 2019-20 campaign that nearly ended in relegation. Their form at the back-end of a disappointing campaign last term has translated well overall in 2020-21 despite their slow start in the opening exchanges.

It’s also important to note that West Ham have garnered a decent record against sides who are around them in the table. Fixtures against Leicester City, Tottenham, Chelsea, Everton, Aston Villa, and Arsenal have resulted in a 3-1-2 record; the losses coming by way of Chelsea and Arsenal.

There are no major warning signs for David Moyes in what is an important trip to the West Midlands, but it should be remembered that many just below the Hammers in the table have matches in hand, while sitting no more than three points adrift. That includes Aston Villa. In a Premier League season that has provided one surprise after the next, West Ham’s staying-power in and amongst the European places for the rest of the season will rest on their ability to earn results against those around them, while seeing-off those in the bottom-half of the table.

A massive downturn in form in conjunction with a surging Arsenal and a potentially refreshed Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel waiting in the wings could would be concerning. A strong result against Villa would go a long way to ease the minds of many.
