Betting prediction: Aston Villa 1 – 1 West Ham

Aston Villa welcomes West Ham to Villa Park in Birmingham on Sunday for this Premier League match.

The Villans have the slight upper hand in the head-to-head, with 13 wins to West Ham’s 11, from their 44 encounters in the Premier League.

In recent games, Aston Villa have struggled to find a win in this fixture. The last 10 matches between the two sides have seen 4 West Ham wins to Villa’s 1. Dean Smith’s men come into this one looking for their first victory in the head-to-head since 2015; a run of 6 games without a win.

The Irons completed a league double over Aston Villa last season. This included a 1-3 win on their last visit to Villa Park.

Aston Villa vs West Ham: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Aston Villa 1 – 1 West Ham is available at odds of 7/1.

1-0 Aston Villa win. Aston Villa’s last home victory over West Ham came back in the 2014/15 season by a scoreline of 1-0. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 11/1.

1-3 West Ham win. West Ham’s last visit to Villa Park back in February ended in a 1-3 victory. You can back them at 21/1 for the same scoreline here on Sunday.

Under 2.5 goals. West Ham’s league double over Villa included two games with over 2.5 goals. However, games between the sides are usually low-scoring affairs, with the 8 matches prior to last season’s all under 2.5 goal outcomes. You can back another low scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 2/1 for under 2.5 goals.

Danny Ings Goalscorer. If footballers have bogey teams that they can’t score against, then West Ham is Danny Ings’ bogey team. It is the team he has the most appearances against without scoring, at 11. The next highest on that list is Barnsley, with 6. The 29-year-old former England international is the 6/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 2.5/1 for Ings (above) to finally break his duck against West Ham at any time during Sunday’s game.

Aston Villa vs West Ham: What are the betting odds?

The Villans are 2.75/1 to end a 6-game run without a win in this head-to-head and take all 3 points from West Ham on Sunday.

Whereas, the Irons are 2.45/1 to pick up back-to-back away wins at Villa Park for the first time since the 1960s.

Neither of these sides draw many games, with Villa without a draw in their last 7 matches and West Ham without a draw in their last 9. Odds of 3.5/1 are available if you see Aston Villa and West Ham cancelling each other out on Sunday.

Aston Villa vs West Ham: Match preview

After a solid start to the season, picking up 10 points from 6 games, the wheels have come off the wagon a little for Dean Smith’s side. Villa have suffered 3 consecutive defeats, and the fact that one came in the West Midlands derby will merely add to the ire of supporters.

Injuries to forwards Leon Bailey and Bertrand Traoré certainly won’t have helped. Although, the decision to recall Emiliano Buendía to the starting XI, who has disappointed since his big-money summer move, ahead of young Jacob Ramsey has frustrated some supporters. Bailey and Ramsey’s cameos last weekend, ultimately combining to score Villa’s only goal, were a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing performance.

It also perhaps highlighted a problem which Villa have, in how they have built their squad. Buendía played exclusively as a right-winger last season when picking up 31 goal involvements in 39 games for Norwich. Traoré also played almost exclusively as a right winter for Villa in his impressive first season at the club, averaging a goal or assist every 167 minutes. Bailey, meanwhile, played almost exclusively on the wing at Bayern Leverkusen, and started nearly twice as much on the right as he did on the left last season.

However, in two-thirds of Villa’s matches this season, they have started with three central defenders and wing-backs in a system that includes no wingers. If you plan to use a system without wingers, then filling the squad with wide-men who predominately favour playing on the right makes little sense from a squad planning point of view.

As a result, Buendía is being shoe-horned into the side as a number 10 at the moment, and looks a shadow of the player seen at Norwich so far.

Despite all of this, we believe the lack of a midweek game, coupled with home advantage, gives Villa a great chance of ending their 3-game losing streak here. Smith will need to find a solution to his winger conundrum, though. Perhaps reverting back to the back-4 system which served his side so well last season is the best answer.

Dean Smith

Aston Villa team news vs West Ham

Trézéguet remains Villa’s only long-term injury, after the knee problem picked up against Liverpool towards the end of last season. He isn’t expected to return to action until the early part of 2022.

Keinan Davis featured for the reserves recently as he continues his rehab from a long-standing knee injury. He may be involved in further reserve games before seeing Premier League action again.

Bertrand Traore missed the last two games with a thigh injury. He faces a late fitness test to be included on the bench here.

Leon Bailey made his return from injury at half-time last weekend against Arsenal. He could make his first Premier League start for Villa here, should the Jamaican prove his fitness in training this week.

Morgan Sanson is rated as doubtful after coming down with an illness this week. He is yet to make a league appearance this season and has been an unused substitute in Villa’s last two league matches.

Jaden Philogene-Bidace is another who has been struck down with illness this week.

West Ham team news vs Aston Villa

The Hammers have one of the best fitness records in the Premier League, as they approach the difficult winter months of the season.

Alex Kral is the only doubt for this game having missed the last two matchday squads due to a positive COVID-19 test. His quarantine period will now have ended but he will still need to prove his fitness to show that there are no lingering effects of the virus.

Whether or not he is available shouldn’t affect the Hammers much either way. Kral has only been involved in 4 matchday squads this season, and was an unused sub on all 4 occasions.

Vladimir Coufal made his return from injury in midweek, with an 8-minute cameo appearance. He is expected to reclaim his starting spot at right-back from Ben Johnson here.

Jarrod Bowen, Saïd Benrahma, Pablo Fornals, Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna, Declan Rice and Michail Antonio were all rested from the starting XI for the EFL Cup victory over Manchester City. They are all expected to return to the starting XI here.
