Betting prediction: Aston Villa 1-1 West Brom

Aston Villa without Jack Grealish is like fighter command without Hugh Dowding; it just is not the same. The Villains have suffered in a big way without the England international, and have only one win in their last six fixtures, and have lost three of their last four.

West Brom has been only marginally better of late, winning two of their last three but remain nine points from being level on points with Burnley, who travel to Wolves earlier in the day. Neither side can boast much to separate themselves from the other, so a draw could be on here.

Aston Villa vs West Brom: Recommended bets

Full-Time Result: Draw

There are decent odds for this, and scope to take a gamble on a draw given when the form of both sides are considered. West Brom’s defensive record overall has been the worst in the Premier League, but Villa lacks the same bite without Jack Grealish, while regularly being difficult to score against as well.

To Score Anytime: Matheus Pereira

With it being unclear if the in-form Callum Robinson will be included in Sam Allardyce’s matchday XI, there is probably no better player than Matheus Pereira to back-grabbing a goal at Villa Park on Sunday. Ollie Watkins is always a good shout, but Pereira comes with a better return on odds and his ability to make things happen by himself that has been on display all season long makes him a considerable threat to get under the skin of the Villa backline.

Aston Villa vs West Brom: Match preview

Aston Villa has come a long way this season after the club narrowly avoided relegation last term and will remain indebted to Jack Grealish for putting the club of his childhood on his back helping them over the line. But Villa still had it all to do in the wake of safety if they were to avoid similar circumstances this season, and they have delivered expertly; conducting themselves in the market more efficiently and effectively than many of the big boys in the top echelon.

All told, the club has been backed financially by its owners Nassif Sawiris and Wes Edens since 2018 to the tune of ~293million, and perhaps no better example of their commitment to the club and its future in the top flight of English football was put on display than this past summer. Everyone knows the list of players that found their way to Villa Park at the end of the transfer window, but many in Aston Villa’s position in years past failed to bring in a considerable supporting cast for a star man, and eventually had to bid adieu to a prize bull rather than adding other quality bulls to the paddock.

The hope, whether if Grealish remains at the club or not this summer, is that the club brass continues with their commitment to invest in the team to push them forward away from the uncertainty of the bottom half of the table. But what is even more important, and probably the most critical time in the club since their ownership has begun, is making sure that the club properly prepares itself for life without Grealish. This season has already given ample evidence to the trials and tribulations on display when the Villa youth product is not available for selection. Dean Smith’s are a different side entirely when he is not on the pitch, and if the club manages to be successful in retaining his services for next season, adding further influential pieces to the puzzle is just as important on bringing in the right player to fill his boots should he finally migrate elsewhere. How will they get on with him against West Brom on Sunday? Time will tell, but history suggests this may only go one way.

West Brom must be near-perfect to avoid what is likely inevitable

No one expected West Brom to get one over on Leicester City when the two sides met on Thursday, but such was the level of dominance on display and the gap shown on the pitch in all respects that proved once again just how far away the Baggies are from being even remotely good enough to progress – or even consistently compete – in the Premier League.

Sam Allardyce himself echoed similar sentiments in the wake of the defeat, giving Brendan Rodgers’ outfit full marks for the manner in which they went for the throat without any letting up in the first 45-minutes that saw the Baggies hit for three in a 13-minute period. Budding strike partnership Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho both found their way on the scoresheet once more, and the paltry four shots that the Baggies managed to muster – and just 27% of the ball – put a swift end to the hopes that West Brom was going to continue clawing their way out of the bottom three in another storybook performance by Big Sam.

The task remaining at the feet of Allardyce and West Brom is all but likely to prove to be insurmountable. Needing to win at least four of their final six fixtures of the season, while hoping both Burnley and Fulham do not get their act back together, is already likely to be one prayer too many. But having to do it against a consortium of sides that features the aforementioned Villa, Wolves, Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham United, and Leeds United? Well…the storyboard may as well be packed away and into mothballs, only to be taken out and dusted off for the next time the Baggies find their way into the Premier League.

This is unequivocally the toughest task of Sam Allardyce’s career and the experienced headmaster has already made his feelings known about whether or not he would be willing to stay with the club if and when they drop down to the Championship. With relegation inevitable at this rate baring, a miracle massive upheaval and course correction is needed if the Baggies intend to shoot right back up the footballing pyramid.

Aston Villa team news vs West Brom

Dean Smith could be up against it during Aston Villa’s run into the end of the campaign, as he is once again without Jack Wilshere, with other selection issues coming to the fore as well.

Both Morgan Sanson and Trezéguet are also unfit for service, while Matty Cash is only temporarily unavailable as he serves a match ban for two bookings against Manchester City.

Wesley is still not back into full first-team duty, thus Villa remains skint on attacking resources for the time being.

West Brom team news vs Aston Villa

Sam Allardyce will be missing just Branislav Ivanovic as West Brom prepares for one of many massive fixtures to close out their season in hopes of avoiding relegation.

If consistency is king, then do not expect many changes from Allardyce here, and could even keep the same XI for the remainder of the campaign bar unforeseen circumstances.
