Betting prediction: Aston Villa 1 – 1 Southampton
The Villa welcome Southampton to Villa Park in Birmingham on Sunday for this Premier League match.
These sides share a remarkably even record here in the Premier League. Their 18 meetings have seen 6 wins apiece and 6 draws.
However, recent matches between these two have been largely dominated by Southampton. Aston Villa are without a win in the last 8 head-to-heads, including the last 5 at Villa Park.
The Saints completed a league double over Aston Villa last season. This includes a 1-3 win here over the Christmas period.
To find Villa’s last home victory in this fixture, you have to go all the way back to 2004. First-half goals from Darius Vassell and Carlton Cole helped the Villains kick-off their 2004/05 campaign with a win.

Aston Villa vs Southampton: What are the betting odds?
Villa haven’t won any of the last 5 home matches in this head-to-head. However, having won 4 out of 5 matches so far this season, they will feel now is the right time to end this winless streak. They are the slight favourites at the start of the match, with odds of 13/10 to win here.
There hasn’t been a drawn match at Villa Park since back at the start of the 2019/20 season. Odds of 13/5 are available if you see Aston Villa and Southampton sharing the points on Sunday.
The Saints have won 5 of the last 6 matches between the two teams. Odds of 15/8 can be found if you think Southampton can make it 4 wins in a row in this head-to-head.

Aston Villa vs Southampton: Recommended bets
101 Great Goals’ prediction of Aston Villa 1 – 1 Southampton is available at odds of 13/2.
Aston Villa’s last home victory over Southampton came back on the opening day of the 2004/05 season by a scoreline of 2-0. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 14/1.
Southampton won 1-3 at Villa Park last season. You can back them at 20/1 for the same scoreline here on Sunday.
The most recent Aston Villa vs Southampton matches have been high scoring games, with 4 out of 6 seeing over 2.5 goals scored, with an average of 4 goals per game. You can back another high scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 4/6 for over 2.5 goals.
Ollie Watkins (pictured above) has taken the Premier League by storm since arriving in the summer from Brentford for a club-record £28m deal. He has 5 goals for Villa already this season, including a stunning hat-trick against reigning champions Liverpool. The 24-year-old forward is the favourite of those in claret to score the game’s opener on Sunday at 9/2. Or 6/5 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Southampton.
Danny Ings was runner-up for the 2019/20 golden boot award, finishing just 1 goal behind Jamie Vardy’s 23 goals. His mission to go one better this season is off to a good start, with 4 goals in his first 6 games of the season. The England international has scored on each of his last two Premier League away days for the Saints. Ings is the favourite to get on the scoresheet at 5/6 on. You can back him at 10/3 to grab the game’s opening goal.

Aston Villa vs Southampton: Match preview
Villa have been this season’s surprise package so far in the Premier League.
They avoided relegation last season by the narrowest of margins. In fact, had ‘Hawkeye’ been functioning properly in their game against Sheffield United at the end of last season, it is suggested they would be in the Championship right now.
In a bizarre set of circumstances, the until-then flawless goal-line technology failed to see a Sheffield United goal because the goalkeeper and post obscured its view. As a result, Aston Villa picked up a point from that match. Ultimately, if that goal had stood and everything else remained the same in the match, then Villa would have finished behind Bournemouth in the table on goal difference.
Of course, reality doesn’t really work that way. Goals change games. The likelihood is, had Villa conceded that goal, then their approach to the game would have changed too. In doing so, they could have lost by more than one goal. But also, they could have found an equaliser or even have won the game once they changed to a more attacking system. The idea that you can change one event in a football match and it would have no bearing on all events that followed it is a fallacy. This is known as the ‘Butterfly Effect’ theory.
Aston Villa’s perfect start to the season
So, Aston Villa’s perfect start to the season over their opening 4 games caught everybody by surprise. It is doubtful even the most staunch Villa fans expected them to have 12 points from 12 having faced Sheffield United, Fulham, Leicester and Liverpool in their opening 4 games.
And yet, going into the Leeds game last weekend, that was the exact situation they were in as the only Premier League team to still have a perfect record from their opening games. They came crashing down to earth as Bielsa’s boys put them to the sword with a 0-3 win at Villa Park.
It was a very even game and you felt whoever scored first would likely win the game. Unfortunately for Dean Smith, it was Leeds who broke the deadlock and then picked off Villa once they opened up looking for an equaliser. They quickly added a 2nd and 3rd, with each goal coming roughly 8 minutes after the previous.
While Leeds are a unique opponent in how they man-mark, Southampton will likely have similar facets to their game on Sunday. The high press, dominating the ball and swarming the box in numbers when they break.
Villa need to prove the start of the season wasn’t a purple patch by getting back to winning ways here. Southampton, on the other hand, played at top-half form the second-half of last season. They will believe, if they can maintain that over the whole of this season, they could sneak into European contention.

Aston Villa team news vs Southampton
Wesley ruptured his cruciate ligament during the busy Christmas period of 2019. While he is now back in training with the ball, he still isn’t involved in full training with the rest of the players. It could be another month still before he can return to action for Villa.
Thomas Heaton, who suffered the same injury as Wesley, could make his return sooner than the Brazilian. He is back training with the group and is expected to be involved in November games for Villa.
Kortney Hause is the only other player ruled out for Villa, due to a groin strain.
Despite their perfect start to the season coming to an end last weekend, Dean Smith is expected to stick with the same players that have started the season so well. Only enforced changes to the starting XI should be expected.

Southampton team news vs Aston Villa
Sam McQueen is ruled out with a cruciate ligament injury.
William Smallbone is also unavailable due to a quadriceps strain. The 20-year-old central midfielder hasn’t played in the Premier League for the Saints since their 2-5 defeat to Spurs back in September.
Ralph Hasenhüttl confirmed last week that Moussa Djenepo has a hamstring injury that will likely keep him out for a few weeks.
“He had a problem with his hamstring. When we see the scans now, it’s definitely an injury. This is something we have to work on, because he has some physical deficiencies.”
– Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton Manager
Mohamed Salisu is the player nearest a return to action for Southampton. Hasenhüttl stated last weekend that he expected him to be available for this match. Having not played any football for the Saints yet this season, expect him to be brought back gently.
