Match preview

The Premier League returns with 17th meeting 12th as Southampton make another trip to the Midlands this Friday night to meet with a struggling Aston Villa at Villa Park with both managers under a bit of pressure.

Steven Gerrard is no doubt in the firing line just as much as any manager in the league right now. In fact, with Bournemouth ahead of Villa and still sacking Scott Parker three weeks ago, there is little to suggest Gerrard won’t be dismissed if he can’t win here. On the other hand, Villa did just manage to get one of the results of the season.

The relentless Erling Haaland-driven Manchester City could only get a point against Villa last time out, as Leon Bailey scored for the club in what was a snatch and grab from the home side. Now back at Villa Park, the club could find themselves inside the relegation zone with a loss and other results going against them, as they are only above the bottom three by goals difference.

Southampton have been topsy-turvy so far this season. Their comeback win against Chelsea was a fantastic result, but with two narrow losses to Manchester United and Wolves in between that game, they remain in 12th and very inconsistent once again.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men have also beaten Leicester City this season, while drawing with Leeds United too. Against Villa, the game could go either way with neither side satisfied with their starts to the new season.
