Aston Villa vs Sheffield United: Match preview

Will this season be a bit more comfortable for Aston Villa?

Last season was the Villains’ first back in the top-flight after three seasons in the Championship and they almost went straight back down.

Jack Grealish’s strike on the final day at the London Stadium saw he beloved Aston Villa stay up by just one point.

This time around, they’ll be desperate for their fate to be decided long before the season’s finale.

Their season was scheduled to kick off last weekend with a trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City.

However, the match was rescheduled due to the Citizen’s participation in European competitions in August.

So, Dean Smith’s side began their season on Tuesday night as they took on Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup second round.

However, the underdogs took the lead after just 93 seconds at the Pirelli Stadium.

Ollie Watkins equalised on his debut before late goals from Jack Grealish and then Keinan Davis saw Villa leave 3-1 winners.

Last season’s League Cup finalists will now travel to either Bristol City in the third round this forthcoming Thursday.

First though, can they get their Premier League campaign started with a win?

Will Sheffield United bounce back?

John Lundstram

As for Sheffield United, they’re returning to the scene of the crime.

In the first game back after the 100-day hiatus, Oli Norwood was denied a goal by a goal-line technology malfunction as the Blades drew 0-0 at Villa Park in June.

Nevertheless, their first season back in the top-flight since 2006/07 will not be remembered for that.

Chris Wilder, against all the odds, took his side to ninth and their highest top division finish since 1991/91.

A remarkable achievement.

However, they can not rest on their laurels, particularly after the start to the season they had last Monday night.

The Blades welcomed Wolverhampton Wanderers to Bramall Lane but were 2-0 down after five and a half minutes.

They could not find a way back into the match as Wolves left 2-0 winners.

It’s far too early to diagnose any second season syndrome but Wilder will want his team to react.

They were, like their hosts, also in Carabao Cup action in midweek, travelling to Burnley on Thursday evening.

Despite taking the lead through David McGoldrick, the tie finished 1-1 so went to a penalty shootout.

Oli McBurnie was the only man to miss a spot-kick so it was Burnley who progressed 5-4.

Will Sheffield United get their first points on the board?

Aston Villa team news vs Sheffield United

After naming a relatively strong XI at Burton last Tuesday, Dean Smith’s stars should be raring to go.

There could be a debut in goal.

Emi Martínez, who joined from Arsenal for £20 million on Wednesday, will make his first start for his new club.

His arrival means Villa have now signed at least one goalkeeper in each of the last five transfer window.

Tom Heaton, who’s injured, Jed Steer, Lovre Kalinić and Ørjan Nyland are all still at the club.

In defence, Tyrone Mings, who started last Tuesday, will keep his place.

However, summer recruit Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa and Matt Targett could all come in alongside him, displacing Ahmed Elmohamady, Kortney Hause and Neil Taylor.

In midfield, Marvelous Nakamba is expected to keep his place with John McGinn and Douglas Luiz coming in alongside.

Henri Lansbury and 19-year-old Jacob Ramsey, who made his full debut at Burton, will drop out.

In attack, last Tuesday was a memorable day for Jack Grealish.

He signed a new five-year deal at Villa in the morning before scoring a spectacular winning goal in the evening.

The captain is expected to make up a front three alongside Trézéguet and club-record signing Ollie Watkins.

Jota, Anwar El Ghazi, Keinan Davis and Mbwana Ally Samatta are the other attacking options.

Wesley is still out after his cruciate ligament rupture on New Years’ Day.

Can Aston Villa make it three Premier League home victories in a row for the first time since October 2007?

Chris Wilder’s team rarely changed last season and is likely to look similar to the one that started last Monday’s league opener.

Aaron Ramsdale will return in goal in place of fellow new recruit Wes Foderingham who made his debut on Thursday.

At the back, John Egan, Chris Basham and Jack O’Connell will all return.

Jack Robinson, Phil Jagielka and Etham Ampadu, who’s joined on loan from Chelsea, made up the back three in mid-week.

At wing-back, George Baldock and Enda Stevens will displace Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe, who both joined from Derby this summer.

In the middle, Oli Norwood will be rejoined by John Lundstram and John Fleck.

Sander Berge and Ben Osborn will make way.

In attack is the only position Wilder likes to rotate.

David McGoldrick’s goal at Burnley could earn him a starting spot alongside captain Billy Sharp.

Oli McBurnie, Oli Burke and Lys Mousset are the other options.

Will the Blades get off the mark?
