The Villains welcome Crystal Palace to Villa Park in Birmingham on Saturday for this Premier League match.

Crystal Palace have the slight upper hand in the head-to-head, with 6 wins to Aston Villa’s 5, from their 16 Premier League encounters.

However, home advantage is clearly crucial in this match, as reflected by the fact that only 1 victory for each side came on their travels. Palace’s Premier League record at Villa Park is 1 win, 3 draws and 4 defeats in 8 matches.

Each of the last 4 Premier League matches between these sides have resulted in a home win. This includes both matches between the pair last season.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: Recommended bets

Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace 2-0 when the sides last faced each other back in July. A repeat of this score on Saturday is available at odds of 10/1.

Crystal Palace’s only win at Villa Park in the Premier League was back in 2013. You can back them at 12/1 for the same 0-1 scoreline here on Saturday.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace has historically been a low scoring game in the Premier League with all but 1 of the 7 matches in the last 15 years seeing under 2.5 goals scored. You can back another low scoring game here on Saturday at evens for under 2.5 goals.

Ollie Watkins seemed to settle into life at Villa rather quickly, scoring 8 goals in his first 10 matches for the club. However, he has since gone 0 for 5, with his last goals coming in the 0-3 win at Arsenal at the start of November. Watkins is the favourite at 4/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 6/5 on to end his mini-drought with a goal at any time during the game against Crystal Palace.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: What are the betting odds?

Villa are the form team coming into this one, having picked up 7 points from 9 in the month of December so far. They also won their home match against Palace last season. They start the match as the 10/11 on favourites to win on Boxing Day.

Palace have lost just once in 4 matches in December, which was a defeat against the reigning Champions last weekend. However, they have only managed to win at Villa Park once in 8 Premier League visits. Hence why they start this match as 11/4 underdogs to win against Villa.

The Villains have drawn only once in 12 Premier League matches this season. While Palace have drawn 2 of their last 3 Premier League matches. Odds of 11/4 are available if you see Aston Villa and Crystal Palace ending in a stalemate on Boxing Day.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace: Match preview

Villa are the form side coming into this Boxing Day clash, with only Manchester United and Liverpool having a superior record in the Premier League in the month of December. They are unbeaten in their last three matches, having kept clean sheets in all three games.

As well as being tight at the back, their forwards are in good form with El Ghazi, Grealish and Watkins all having found the net multiple times in the past seven games. Bertrand Traoré also grabbed his first Premier League goal for the club last weekend against West Brom.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have started sliding down the table after a good start to the season. Only West Brom, Arsenal and Sheffield United have collected fewer points from their last 6 matches than Crystal Palace. All clubs who have either replaced their manager, or are tipped to do so if the situation doesn’t improve imminently.

They have also struggled in attack as of late too. While 7 goals in those 6 matches sounds solid enough, 5 of those goals came in one match against a West Brom side who went down to 10-men with the game still at 1-1.

This is also a fixture that tends to favour the home team historically. Although, if you believe in omens, perhaps the fact that Crystal Palace’s only Premier League win in this fixture also happens to be the only previous time these sides have met on Boxing Day.

Aston Villa team news vs Crystal Palace

Wesley has yet to feature for Villa this season as he continues his rehabilitation following surgery on his ACL. Based on the update provided at the start of the month, it seems he will be back on the pitch early in 2021.

“He’s at a stage now where he’s building up his aerobic capacity. He’s been handed over by the physios to the sports conditioning team.”
– Dean Smith, Aston Villa Manager

Trezeguet will also miss out on Boxing Day due to a thigh injury that has caused him to miss Villa’s last 3 matches.

Ross Barkley (above) has also been out with a thigh injury lately. He is nearer to a return than Trezeguet and could be involved at the weekend if he passes a fitness test before the squad is announced.

Ezri Konsa has missed the previous two matches due to illness. However, Smith confirmed he is back in training and in contention to reclaim his place in the starting XI from Kortney Hause.

Crystal Palace team news vs Aston Villa

Connor Wickham remains ruled out for Palace. The forward has yet to play for Palace this season and no update on his availability has been provided since September.

Wayne Hennessey is also out until January at the earliest. Palace are well stocked in the goalkeeping positions and it is unlikely he will feature again for the club since Jack Butland’s arrival as #2.

Nathan Ferguson is yet to play for the club since signing on a free transfer from West Brom in the summer. He is currently injured with a thigh injury and won’t feature for his new club until 2021.

Martin Kelly (above) has also yet to play for Palace this season. Although, the former Liverpool man has been named on the bench on a number of occasions as an unused substitute. He has been unavailable for selection the past 2 months due to a problem with his calf muscle.

Mamadou Sakho is also out due to a slight calf strain which needs monitoring.

Gary Cahill is also rated at 50/50 for this match due to a hamstring problem he felt during the match against Liverpool. His injury would give Hodgson a major headache at the back, with only Scott Dann and James Tomkins available among the senior central defenders at the club.

Christian Benteke missed the 0-7 battering at the hands of his former club Liverpool due to suspension. He is available for selection again and is expected to return to the starting XI here to face another of his former clubs, at the expense of Jordan Ayew.
