Betting prediction: Aston Villa 2-2 Arsenal

This is a very difficult match to call in almost every area.

When Aston Villa turn up, they’re one of the best sides in the Premier League on their day this season; but then you have performances like midweek against West Ham as the counter-balance.

As for Arsenal, their performance in the first-half against Wolves was superb, and then it all fell off the rails in the second forty-five. They’ll feel hard done by the result.

With the two sides separated by just a single point in the table, there should be goals in this as both are capable. An entertaining draw could result.

The data comparison of the two sides shows a pretty even split on the defensive side of the ball. But no Bernd Leno (suspended) means another clean sheet for Arsenal is not likely. Villa create plenty of chances and a reinvigorated Gunners forward-line has looked effective.

Ollie Watkins to score anytime

With three goals in Villa’s last four Premier League fixtures, Ollie Watkins has rediscovered his goalscoring form that netted him a move to Villa Park from Brentford last summer. The English centre-forward could find his tenth of the season with Bernd Leno unavailable in the Arsenal goal.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal: Match preview

Aston Villa‘s impressive run in the 2020-21 Premier League season has hit a bit of a snag in recent weeks, with the Villains losing four out of their last six league fixtures. Their 3-1 loss against West Ham at the weekend could be the beginning of a worrying period.

Recent losses away at both Manchester clubs can be excused – especially given the full-time score lines – but the 3-2 loss at Burnley is another concern that needs to be highlighted for a side that could be running out of petrol rapidly.

The West Ham result was the first of a rapid-fire course of fixtures that will make or break Villa’s campaign and unexpected aspirations of European football. After Arsenal at the weekend, the Villa Park outfit clash with a dogged Brighton-side, Leicester City, Leeds United, and a capable Wolves that is desperate for a rebound.

Plugging holes at the back is a must for Smith in the short term. His first-choice XI exudes confidence when in the attack, but despite the performances of ex-Arsenal keeper Emi Martínez in goal, Villa have shipped ten goals in their last six matches (42% of their season total). That number constitutes one of the worst defensive records over that form period. Coming up against an Arsenal side that has renewed confidence and effectiveness in the final third recently, this is a big test that Villa must pass.

Arsenal out to set the record straight after disappointing midweek

Arsenal will undoubtedly feel hard-done in the wake of their 2-1 loss away at Wolves in midweek. After putting on a credible display in arguably one of their best 45-minute periods of the entire season, the Gunners fell to ten-men on the stroke of half-time through a controversial sending-off of David Luiz.

Things would go from bad to worse when Bernd Leno received his marching orders halfway through the second-frame for a deliberate handball outside the box, though at that point Mikel Arteta’s troops had already fallen behind after a super Joao Moutinho strike from range earlier in the half.

What is encouraging for the north London club is how well they played with complete parity, and even when they were down a man. The forward-line featuring a rejuvenated Nicolas Pépé, Alexandre Lacazette, Emile Smith Rowe, and Bukayo Saka has been the headline feature. Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey have both contributed in big ways as well, with the Ghanaian putting in a superb shift in the opening 45-minutes at Wolves.

Despite the sentiments in the wake of the result, Arsenal will still feel upbeat about their chances against a stuttering Villa side who look off the boil in comparison to earlier in the season. While Arsenal fans still have not seen any considerable amount of loan-signing Martin Ødegaard yet, the Norwegian international prodigy could make an appearance after Smith Rowe we yet-again relied on heavily in midweek. Arsenal’s first defeat in their last eight is likely to not be a full-stop on their form.

A three-point haul for either side sees them back on track for a continued assault on the Europa League places.

Aston Villa team news vs Arsenal

Dean Smith remains with a fully-fit, first-choice XI. Kortney Hause and Wesley are the only continuing absentees going into Saturday.

There could be some rotation for the match against Arsenal, however. Villa looked tired and depleted against Everton in midweek, so manager Smith may decide to ring some changes.

Arsenal team news vs Aston Villa

Arsenal will be without David Luiz and Bernd Leno after both were given straight red cards in the Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Wolves.

Newly signed goalie Mat Ryan remains a doubt and is likely to not be ready to stand-in on short notice.

Sticking with Arsenal’s defensive headaches, Kieran Tierney also remains unavailable.
