Betting prediction: Arsenal 2 – 1 Watford

Arsenal welcomes Watford to the Emirates Stadium in London on Sunday for this Premier League match.

The Gunners have the strong upper hand in the head-to-head, with 11 wins to Watford’s 2, from their 14 encounters in the Premier League.

Watford dominated the encounters between them in the 1980s prior to the formation of the Premier League. The Hornets had 9 wins to Arsenal’s 3 during the ‘80s

Recently, though, the Hornets have struggled to find a win in this fixture. The last 5 matches between the two sides have seen 4 Arsenal wins and a draw. The Gunners won all 3 of their home matches in this head-to-head in that time.

Arsenal vs Watford: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Arsenal 2 – 1 Watford is available at odds of 9/1.

3-2 Arsenal win. Arsenal have scored 3 goals in 3 of their last 5 home matches. They beat Watford 3- 2 here when the clubs last met back in July 2020, in the final game of the season before the Hornets’ relegation. A repeat of this 3-2 scoreline on Sunday is available at odds of 26/1.

2-2 draw. There has been only 1 draw in this head-to-head in the Premier League era; a 2-2 draw in Watford in September 2019. Odds of 19/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

1-2 Watford win. Watford have won 3 of the last 10 matches in this head-to-head, all by a 2-1 scoreline. You can back them at 23/1 for the same scoreline here on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals. Arsenal vs Watford has historically been a high scoring game in the Premier League era with 13 of the 16 matches in all competitions finishing with over 2.5 goals. You can back another high scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 1.61/1 for over 2.5 goals.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Goalscorer. Aubameyang must be licking his lips at the prospect of facing Watford again, if his record against them to date is anything to go by. No player has scored more goals in this fixture than Auba (above), who has 6 in 5 appearances against the Hornets, including braces in each of his last 2 matches against them.

The Gabon international has scored in each of his last 4 home matches for the Gunners, and is the 4/1 favourite to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 1.72/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Watford.

Arsenal vs Watford: What are the betting odds?

The Gunners are the heavy favourites at 1.4/1 to make it 4 home wins in a row in this head-to-head, by taking all 3 points from Watford on Sunday.

Whereas, the Hornets are 8/1 to make it 3 wins in 4 on the road this season, by picking up a win at the Emirates Stadium.

Per Mertesacker & Granit Xhaka celebrate v Watford

Per Mertesacker & Granit Xhaka during the Premier League match between Watford and Arsenal at Vicarage Road on October 14, 2017 in Watford, England.

Arsenal vs Watford: Match preview

The Gunners have found their groove this season having won 7 of 9 matches, in all competitions, since a 5-0 battering at the hands of Manchester City which resulted in some fans calling for Mikel Arteta’s head.

The lack of European football has allowed Arteta to keep his side fresh and his in-form players on the pitch. In the EFL Cup, he has also managed to get through both games with a largely second-string XI, despite facing Premier League opposition in Leeds.

Arsenal have the emptiest physio room in football, too, with Granit Xhaka the only injured player from the first team squad at the moment. This will be excellent news for Arsenal fans who grew up witnessing their side have the most injured players in the league during the Arsene Wenger era. Players like Walcott, Rosicky, van Persie, Diaby, Wilshere and Sagna seemed to spend most of their Arsenal careers out injured rather than on the pitch.

While a season without European football is less enjoyable for fans, and sees the club take a hit financially, it could also be exactly what Arteta and this Arsenal squad needs to rebuild. A season of relative calm and tranquility to get things right on the training pitches in midweek, in preparation for every league game.

Chelsea used a season without European football to mount an assault on the Premier League under Antonio Conte. They have won trophies in 4 of the 5 seasons since finishing 10th in 2016.

Jurgen Klopp’s first full season at Liverpool was also spent without the distraction of European football. They have likewise won 4 trophies since finishing 8th in 2016, and are currently the only unbeaten side in the Premier League.

This has to be the aim now for Arsenal, too. Utilise the extra 2 or 3 days a week training to prepare this young squad for the coming seasons. While Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City all look likely to finish in the top-4, there is a spot wide open for any side that can pick up 70+ points this season. Especially with Manchester United struggling.

With the Manchester Derby and West Ham facing Liverpool this weekend, a win here could put Arsenal in the top-4 come Monday morning.

Arsenal team news vs Watford

Granit Xhaka (above) remains Arsenal’s only long-term injury problem. Xhaka suffered a medial collateral ligament injury in late September and is expected to return towards the start of 2022.

Kieran Tierney is the Gunners’ only other injury doubt having missed the last 2 games due to a bruised left ankle. However, he faces a battle to replace Nuno Tavares at left-back, as the Portuguese under-21 international has impressed since coming into the side.

Nicolas Pépé, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Ødegaard are the attacking trio looking to benefit from any shuffling of the deck from Arteta. However, with no European football this season, Arsenal can play the same XI and avoid disrupting a winning pattern on the pitch.

Watford team news vs Arsenal

Watford’s injury list is starting to grow.

Peter Etebo was already on the long-term injury list having torn a quad muscle towards the end of the Newcastle game. He has had surgery to repair the damage and is expected to be out for at least 4 months.

Christian Kabasele is only in the initial rehabilitation stages with a hamstring injury that caused him to miss Watford’s last 3 matches.

Ken Sema is expected to be out until December due to an MCL injury sustained in training.

Kwadwo Baah is now also out due to a fractured ankle in training.

Emmanuel Dennis returns after missing last weekend’s match against Southampton due to suspension for accumulating 5 yellow cards this season. He is expected to replace Cucho Hernandez (pictured above) in the starting XI.

Kiko Femenia also returns having recovered from a knock to the hip against Liverpool. He could replace Jeremy Ngakia at right back.

Francisco Sierralta is in contention to start for the first time since picking up a hamstring injury during the game against Leeds. Craig Cathcart is the more likely of the two central defenders to lose his place to Sierralta.
