Arsenal vs Norwich City: Match preview
Two teams from the zero points club face each other on Saturday, with at least one guaranteed to register their first points of the season here.
For Norwich, they have continued from where they left off when relegated from the Premier League. They finished the 2019/20 campaign with 10 straight defeats, but were hopeful that with a season to regroup in the Championship, and a lot of new faces to provide some much-needed quality in depth, they would fare better this time around.
However, it feels like much of the same, with their losing streak in the English top-flight now extended to 13 games, having scored just 1 goal, while giving up 10 at the other end in 3 games this season. The Canaries finished their previous campaign in the top flight 13-points adrift of 19th placed Watford, with the lowest number of goals scored and highest number of goals conceded. Their goal difference of -49 was more than 20 goals worse than any of the other teams.
It says a lot that Arsenal’s start has been even worse than that of Norwich. They sit anchored to the bottom of the table on the same -9 goal difference, but without even having registered on the scoresheet so far this season.
Both teams will point to a difficult fixture list, particularly Norwich facing the last two Premier League champions back-to-back followed by last season’s 5th placed side, Leicester.
After a surprise defeat at Brentford, Arsenal have also faced the holders of the Champions League and the Premier League in back-to-back games.
Saturday represents a somewhat easier proposition for both sides compared to what has come before. For Norwich, it is a chance to prove that they won’t just be the league’s whipping boys this season. For Mikel Arteta, it is the chance to prove Brentford was just a bad day at the office. Another defeat for him here would see the voices of discontent turn into full-blown shouts.
Arsenal team news vs Norwich City
Edward Nketiah and Thomas Partey (above) suffered near identical ankle ligament injuries in the same pre-season match against Chelsea. They have been working on their fitness over the international break and could be involved here, albeit from the bench.
Ben White hasn’t featured for Arsenal since the 0-2 defeat in Brentford in their opening game of the season, due to a positive Covid-19 test. The international break should have provided him the time for the virus to clear his system, and the defender should be back in the starting XI here.
However, Granit Xhaka, who would have missed this match due to suspension, will take his place in isolation having now received a positive test. Sambi Lokonga is expected to come back into the side to replace him.
Nicolas Pepe missed the match against Manchester City due to illness. He is also expected back in the side here.
He likely replaces Emile Smith Rowe in the starting XI, after the midfielder left the England under-21 squad with a non-Covid related illness.
Sead Kolasinac and Mohamed Elneny are both likely to miss the match, too, having failed to recover from knocks.
Norwich City team news vs Arsenal
Sam Byram is still rehabbing a thigh injury he suffered last season. No return date has been provided as of yet for first team contention.
Przemyslaw Placheta is still suffering symptoms from the Covid infection picked up in pre-season, and remains unavailable for selection.
Bali Mumba is also out after he dislocated his knee after a bad tackle in the League Cup game against Bournemouth.
Christos Tzolis is yet to feature in the Premier League since joining the club in the summer. He has been an unused substitute on two occasions, but is now struggling with a calf problem.
