Arsenal vs Liverpool Premier League match preview

Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday night.

The match will tell us a lot about how Arsenal have changed under Unai Emery. Arsenal began the season with defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea and have since had comparably favourable fixtures.

The Gunners’ 11-match winning streak came to an end last weekend as they drew 2-2 at Crystal Palace.

Shkodran Mustafi clumsily gave away a penalty late in the first half before a quick-fire double from Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had Arsenal in front early in the second period.

Arsenal conceded another penalty late on as their makeshift defence was made to pay.

The point was enough to leave Arsenal inside the top four on 22 points, a point above North London rivals Tottenham.

Unai Emery’s side were in midweek Carabao Cup action, facing Blackpool on Wednesday night.

A heavily-rotated eleven beat the League One side 2-1 at the Emirates, with goals from Stephen Lichtsteiner and 18-year-old Emile Smith Rowe. Matteo Guendouzi, who assisted Arsenal’s first goal, was sent off for two yellow card offences.

If Arsenal avoid defeat on Saturday their unbeaten run across all competitions will extend to 15 matches.

Aubameyang begins the weekend as the joint-top scorer in the league on 7 goals.

Salah back in form

Liverpool begin the weekend in 2nd place, level on points with league leaders Manchester City.

Remarkably, Liverpool are one of three sides still unbeaten in the league – along with City and Chelsea.

Last weekend the Reds beat Cardiff 4-1 at Anfield with goals from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane (2) and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Salah has now scored four goals in Liverpool’s last three matches and is seemingly back to his dangerous best.

Last season’s corresponding fixture ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw.

Saturday’s match will be the 53rd Premier League meeting between the two sides. Liverpool lead Arsenal with 19 wins to 15.

Arsenal team news vs Liverpool

Emery rung the changes on Wednesday night. Petr Cech and Shkodran Mustafi both started, suggesting that Bernd Leno and Sokratis will start on Saturday.

Hector Bellerin could miss out with a muscle injury picked up at Crystal Palace.

Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of left-backs Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac who have both missed recent matches.

Granit Xhaka and Stephen Licthsteiner have deputised there lately, but Guendouzi’s suspension and Bellerin’s injury mean that the duo may be required in their regular positions.

Fit-again Ainsley Maitland-Niles can play at left-back as a last resort.

Laurent Koscielny, Mohamed Elneny and Konstantinos Mavropanos are all sidelined.

Liverpool team news vs Arsenal

Former Arsenal winger Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury.

Central midfielders Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson are both doubts for the match.

James Milner and Fabinho are expected to start alongside Gini Wijnaldum in a midfield three.

Klopp may opt to start Joe Gomez ahead of Dejan Lovren at the back.
