Arsenal vs Liverpool betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are on the cusp of completing Premier League campaigns that they would rather soon forget. The current holders are a shadow of the side that blitzed its way to the title last term, while Arsenal has yet to truly get back to the level so many deem necessary that was a base-level requirement under Arsène Wenger.

Betting prediction: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool

Just four points separate Arsenal and Liverpool when they come to grips with one another on Saturday, in a match that is hardly a straightforward affair. The Gunners are comfortably ahead of the Reds in the form table of late, while also being one of the highest-scoring outfits in the Premier League in their last six fixtures. By contrast, Liverpool’s struggles in the final third persist and have led to just two wins in their last six. All things point to Arsenal getting one over on the current holders, but they are so often their own worst enemies even after considerable improvement with Mikel Arteta at the helm. A draw would not be all that shocking.

Arsenal vs Liverpool: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Draw – Yes

Liverpool’s goal-scoring woe’s combined with Arsenal’s vastly improved performances at the back this season on the whole paint the picture that the Reds could struggle in north London, but their front-three – even without Roberto Firmino should he not feature – remains one of the best in the Premier League. Arsenal should be able to craft chances against a reduced Liverpool backline as well, so a scoring draw is a good possibility.

To Score First: Diogo Jota

In form and with a good shout at starting, the Portuguese international could get Liverpool off and running early against an Arsenal side that far too often – even under Arteta – start slow out of the blocks and allow one too many key chances before they put the key in their own ignition. Jota’s qualities on the ball and directness in the final third could wreak havoc if he’s left unchecked.

Arsenal vs Liverpool: Match preview

Arsenal has been in a critical period of their season for what seems like months now. Their crunch win against Chelsea back in December arguably saved their season from more uncertainly and, almost assuredly, saved Mikel Arteta from the sack. Since then, seemingly every week, no matter the opponent or competition, Arsenal have needed to be all hands on deck to string together a run of form that was capable of bringing them out of the doldrums. Fast-forward to the present, and they are still in with a shout at qualifying for Europe via the league and are just a few steps away from a trip to Gdansk and the Europa League final.

Just like many times before, Arsenal finds themselves in that same scenario once again when they welcome Liverpool to the Emirates. It’s another crucial period that has bigger implications overall for the Gunners as they look to finally kick-start the process of progression under Arteta. Just seven points separate the Gunners from fifth and a guaranteed Europa League place via the league; a point gap that is hardly insurmountable. But it certainly does seem that to win the competition outright is the most logical course of action, despite the tough test of surprise package Slavia Prague waiting for them on the continent.

Everything remains connected, however, and a loss to Liverpool could have knock-on consequences in Europe. Conversely, a confident showing and three points against Jürgen Klopp could help build a final springboard to a post-Christmas recovery that would be considerable. Arsenal’s top guns will have to step up if that is to happen though, especially Gabonese hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. If he can find late-season form, anything is possible given the creativity that now exists behind him.

Fabinho “return” could be a much-needed tonic for Liverpool

Everything needs to run smoothly on a tactical level if a club – any club – has ambitions of hauling silverware in a football season. This was fully on display last term to spectacular results for Liverpool last term, the same way as it has been when City have won the league under Pep Guardiola, Arsène Wenger’s historic Arsenal sides, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United; the list goes on. It is the precise reason why the Reds have struggled so mightily this season…a distinct lack of the right pieces. So often it was square pegs in round holes at best, let alone its worst.

The absence of Virgil van Dijk would have crippled even the biggest clubs, but the additional injury woes at the back caused one of Jürgrn Klopp’s key ingredients to have to deputize in an area where his qualities are reduced. The redeployment of Fabinho into the heart of the defense rather than in his traditional 6 role may have arguably been just as damaging to Liverpool as Van Dijk’s lengthy spell on the treatment table. For a system such as Klopp’s, the holding midfielder is absolutely vital in everything they hope to achieve on a tactical level, especially considering the heavy reliance on the wing-back positions to provide additional within the final third. Having a highly capable holding player in the center of the back can make or break the entire team’s performance.

But much to his excitement, the Brazilian is happy to be back where he belongs full time, as the center-back pairing of Ozan Kabak and Nathaniel Phillips bearing more and more fruit as time passes. By his own admission, Fabinho was hardly happy playing in a role he was not accustomed to, featuring at the back in fifteen of his nineteen starts this season. What is more impressive is that he performed well in that role despite his distaste for it, but seeing him back in a trio with Georginio Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara could be a real boon for the remainder of Liverpool’s season and any hope that they can climb further up the table into the European places.

Arsenal team news vs Liverpool

Mikel Arteta will have a few squad concerns when Arsenal welcomes Liverpool to the capital on Saturday, though he will have Willian and Martin Ødegaard available.

David Luiz will not be available for selection through injury and is the only guaranteed option to be unavailable.

Questions also surround Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, and Granit Xhaka; the young English pair are trying to recover from knocks while Xhaka has been ill. All three face late assessments.

Liverpool team news vs Arsenal

Jürgen Klopp’s absentee list has not changed for Liverpool’s trip south to the Emirates Stadium. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, and Jordan Henderson will all miss the clash with the Gunners.

Roberto Firmino has returned to training however and is expected to be available for selection but it is unclear if Klopp will slot him straight back into the XI or keep faith in the in-form Diogo Jota.
