Betting prediction: Arsenal 1-1 Leeds United

One of the better attacking-sides in the Premier League in Leeds United always fancy themselves a goal or two, but Arsenal’s stability at the back under Mikel Arteta could frustrate Marcelo Bielsa on his travels. A draw would seem fair here, but there is plenty in the tank for both sides to squeak more if they’re on it.

Arsenal vs Leeds United: Recommended bets

First to Score: Patrick Bamford

It’s no surprise to back Patrick Bamford to bag a goal any given weekend as the Leeds centre-forward sits 6th in the goal-scoring charts, considering Arsenal’s penchant for being a far-better side in the second half. Leeds will create, and Bamford is always a threat this season.

Under 2.5 Goals

It’s always tricky to predict which shoe drops first when sides with opposing strengths face-off. But for this, I’m going with fewer goals than maybe some could see on offer. Arsenal are genuinely strong at the back, and Leeds does have a habit of being hit-and-miss when they play against bigger (on paper) clubs.

Arsenal vs Leeds United: Match preview

It’s back to the drawing board for Arsenal and boss Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have now dropped two on the spin in the Premier League, and have won just two in their last six league fixtures. After a period of growth that saw them post a 5-2-0 record in a seven-match undefeated run that began on Boxing Day and ended with dreaded Wolves loss, the north London outfit remain frustrating in the final third.

Their performances at the back deserve plenty of praise, boasting a defensive record that is second-best in the division and well-clear of Manchester United and Liverpool while being as stout as Leicester City and Chelsea. But like a handful of sides sitting much lower in the table than Arsenal, goals are at a premium for the thirteen-time champions of England, yet they do not have the luxury of excusing their failings on the back of a lack of quality.

It has been talked about ad nauseam this term, but just twenty-seven goals from twenty-three matches is hardly a sustainable platform to build a push for Europe. This is compounded by the incredibly sharp dip in form and effectiveness from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the Gunners’ captain hitting just five goals in nineteen league appearances this term; his worst ratio since 2010-11.

Though Leeds are much more effective in the final-third by comparison, the Elland Road outfit struggle considerably at the back and boast one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League. If Arsenal are to get back on track, a much-improved attacking performance is required; a weakened Leeds may be just the tonic.

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 29: Raphinha and Stuart Dallas of Leeds United celebrate their team’s first goal, an own goal by Romaine Sawyers of West Bromwich Albion during the Premier League match between West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United at The Hawthorns on December 29, 2020 in West Bromwich, England. Raphinha quickly becoming a key-man for Marcelo Bielsa

There have been quite a few stand-out performers for Leeds United this season. Patrick Bamford’s 12-goal-tally is right up there with the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Jamie Vardy. Jack Harrison has gone from City Football Group castaway to key contributor at Elland Road, while Mateusz Klich is the standard-bearer for Poland in the Premier League and Kalvin Philipps shows he may quickly outgrow his surroundings.

But Raphinha has been a brilliant signing by the club this past summer after completing his move from Ligue 1-side Stade Rennais. And in a summer that included other highly-lauded business for players like Robin Koch (SC Freiburg), Diego Llorente (Real Sociedad), Illan Meslier, Rodrigo, and the Jack Harrison loan, that stands as a testament to how good he has been in white.

Four goals and four assists up to the current point of the campaign is a good return in a debut season that is trending in the right direction. His importance to the side has also been commented on by right-sided partner Luke Ayling, with the English right-back reflecting on his role in making the Brazilian comfortable on the pitch to allow him the freedom to elevate the side. Though Harrison has bagged more goals from off the left-hand side and has an equal amount of assists, Raphinha’s 2.3 shots/90minutes is second only to Bamford, and the number of chances he creates when expressing himself has become a vital vein of creativity for Bielsa. It is likely that his importance will be highlighted once again against an Arsenal-side still missing Kieran Tierney.

Arsenal team news vs Leeds United

Both Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey will miss Arsenal’s key fixture against Leeds United. The pair may also miss additional time as well.

Mikel Arteta can welcome back David Luiz and Bernd Leno from suspension after the fiasco against Wolves.

Expect Arsenal to field their strongest possible XI, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang despite Benfica coming up in midweek.

Leeds United team news vs Arsenal

Marcelo Bielsa is still without a considerable complement of players. Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Rodrigo, Gaetano Berardi, Ian Poveda-Ocampo, and Adam Foreshaw are all unavailable.

Kalvin Philipps will need a late fitness test to ensure his availability, but if he passes fit, the England international is sure to feature in the matchday XI.
