Match preview

Arsenal’s perfect start to the season is over.

Last Sunday, the Gunners were beaten 3-1 at Old Trafford by Manchester United, well and truly sucker-punched on the counter attack.

Gabriel Martinelli thought he’d broken the deadlock after ten minutes, only for the goal to be chalked off for a very dubious foul by Martin Ødegaard.

Then, in the second period, Bukayo Saka did make it 1-1, only for Man United to catch Arsenal cold on the counter twice.

Despite their first defeat of the season, Mikel Arteta’s team remain top of the Premier League, having actually won five out of five beforehand.

On Thursday evening, the Gunners kicked off their Europa League campaign with a victory over FC Zürich.

Marquinhos, on debut, poked home a low Eddie Nketiah cross, only for the Swiss champions to equalise from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time.

However, it was then rolls reverse in the second period when Marquinhos’ inch-perfect cross was headed home by Nketiah at the back post.

2-1 it finished at Kybunpark and, with PSV and Bodø/Glimt drawing in Eindhoven, Arsenal are top of Group A.

Now, will the Gunners ensure they end the weekend top of the Premier League?

Everton meanwhile are still yet to win this season, but have now drawn four successive matches, following back-to-back defeats to start.

The Toffees welcomed Liverpool to Goodison for last weekend’s Merseyside derby and, despite the fact it finished goalless, it was a very eventful affair.

Conor Coady thought he’d won it against his former club, sparking wild celebrations, only for it to be disallowed for offside.

Jordan Pickford was the star of the day, making eight saves, but he’s now out for a month due to a thigh injury.

So Asmir Begović, who’s conceded 22 goals in eight appearances at the Emirates, including five in May, will deputise.

Everton did win 1-0 in North London in April 2021, but haven’t won away to Arsenal in front of fans since 1996.

Will that record come to an end, or will the Gunners claim the three points they need to return to the top of the table?
