Arsenal vs Burnley betting tips: Premier League preview, predictions and odds

After Thursday night’s major disappointment, can Arsenal end a miserable January with a win?

In midweek, the Gunners crashed out the Carabao Cup to Liverpool, losing 2-0 at home, having resolutely held out for a goalless draw at Anfield a week earlier.

The hosts lacked any fluency or zest so rather meekly squandered an excellent chance to reach Wembley and a cup final.

Arsenal are still winless in 2022 having lost to Manchester City on New Years’ Day and then gone out the FA Cup at Nottingham Forest.

Now, Mikel Arteta’s side have just 18 games left this season and fourth place is well and truly up for grabs.

As it stands, having ended 2021 with four straight wins, the Gunners are sixth, level with Manchester United, one point behind Spurs and two adrift of West Ham.

Arsenal don’t play again until 10 February, a trip to Wolves, so will not want to go into that extended break following another poor result.

Despite all the hullabaloo surrounding last weekend’s North London Derby postponement, it’s Burnley who’ve had the most games called off.

Five of the Clarets’ last seven engagements, including the same Watford game twice, haven’t gone ahead, meaning they’ve played just twice since 12 December.

In both of these games, Sean Dyche’s team have lost 3-1, first at Manchester United and then, crucially, at Leeds United three days later.

Last weekend, as they weren’t in action again, the Clarets slipped to the bottom of the table but they’ve played up to four games less than some of their direct rivals.

A year ago, Burnley 1-0 won at the Emirates, their first such win since 1974, so are now looking to win back-to-back away games at Arsenal for the very first time.

Will Burnley leap off the bottom of the table with a shock win?

Arsenal’s squad is looking extremely thin at the moment, exacerbated by the fact four players have left this month and none have come in.

At the back, after seemingly being rushed back from injury, Takehiro Tomiyasu had his worst performance in an Arsenal shirt on Thursday.

But, with Calum Chambers and Cédric both injured, the Japanese international may start at right-back again.

In midfield is where Arsenal remain incredibly light.

On Tuesday, Thomas Partey and Ghana were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations by Comoros.

Then, on Thursday, Partey landed in London at midday, was on the bench against Liverpool, came on in the 74th minute and was sent off in stoppage time.

So, Thomas and Granit Xhaka are now both suspended, leaving Albert Sambi Lokonga as the only senior defensive midfield option.

Due to very limited options, the same attacking quartet could be deployed, even though Emile Smith Rowe didn’t look fit in the midweek match either.

Given that Burnley have only played once in three weeks, an FA Cup loss to Huddersfield, it’s hard to known what kind of shape they’re in.

One thing that is known is that they could struggle for goals.

Chris Wood has joined Newcastle United while Maxwel Cornet is away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Côte d’Ivoire.

The good news is that, unless les Éléphants reach the semi-finals in Cameroon, this’ll be the last fixture he misses.

Without the two men who’ve scored 56% of their league goals this season, Jay Rodriguez and Aaron Lennon could lead the line.

Ashley Barnes is still an injury doubt.
