Arsenal welcomes Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium in London on Friday for this Premier League match.

The Gunners have the upper hand in the head-to-head, with 27 wins to Aston Villa’s 11, from their 52 encounters in the Premier League.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of Arsenal 2 – 1 Aston Villa is available at odds of 9.5/1.

3-2 Arsenal win. Arsenal’s last victory over Aston Villa came here in London back in September 2019 by a 3-2 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Friday is available at odds of 29/1.

1-1 draw. There hasn’t been a draw in the capital between these two sides since the 2007/08 season, when they drew 1-1 in back-to-back seasons. Odds of 7.5/1 are available if you see this match finishing with the same result.

0-1 Aston Villa win. Aston Villa have won 2 of the last 3 matches in this head-to-head by a 1-0 scoreline, including when they met earlier this year in Birmingham. You can back them at 13/1 for the same scoreline here on Friday.

Over 2.5 goals. Every match in the last decade between these sides in London has finished with over 2.5 goals scored. This includes Villa’s 0-3 win here last season. You can back an 11th-straight over 2.5 goal game on Friday with odds of 1.9/1.

Ollie Watkins Goalscorer. Watkins (above) has a fantastic record against Arsenal, with 3 goals in 2 Premier League appearances against the Gunners. The 25-year-old hasn’t gotten up and running properly this season with just 1 goal in 6 appearances for Villa. The England international is 9.5/1 to score the game’s opener on Friday, just as he did when these sides met earlier this year. Or you can back Watkins at 3.75/1 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa: What are the betting odds?

The Gunners have won just 1 of 4 of the matches between these sides since Villa’s promotion back in 2019. Still, they are the 1.85/1 favourites to take all 3 points on Friday.

Whereas the Villans are 4/1 to make it 4 wins in a row against Arsenal with an away triumph at Emirates Stadium.

Odds of 3.6/1 are available if you see Arsenal and Aston Villa cancelling each other out on Friday, ending a run of 11 games in London without a draw between them.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa: Match preview

While these two sides have had similar starts to the season in terms of points on the board, they are in very different places in terms of how fans will feel about their situations.

Arsenal had a shocking start to the season, which saw them at the bottom of the Premier League table without even registering a goal upon the first international break rolling around. However, since then, they have gone on a run of 6 games undefeated in all competitions with a 3-1 win in the North-London derby being the highlight of their run of form. Although, draws in their last 2 Premier League games will have fans concerned regarding a slip back into old ways.

Villa, on the other hand, have been on a rollercoaster of results all season. Defeats at both Watford and Brentford were followed by victories. Back-to-back wins against Everton and United were then followed by back-to-back defeats against Spurs and Wolves.

A concern may be their underlying numbers, though. Dean Smith’s men have only been ahead on expected goals (or xG) twice this season. The 2-0 victory over Newcastle saw them ahead 1.18 to 0.63 in xG. Likewise, their 3-0 win against Everton was perhaps a little flattering based on their 0.78 to 0.76 xG for the match. Of course, Villa will point at the difficulty in fixtures over the past 6 games as a mitigating factor.

What can’t be denied, though, is the importance of the first goal in this game. Both teams have struggled this season once they have fallen behind, each picking up just 1 point from a losing position.

Does this see the managers approach games as needing to score first, or needing to avoid conceding first? The danger is a focus on not falling behind in the game naturally leading to more draws as a result.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa betting tips: Preview, predictions & odds

Arsenal team news vs Aston Villa

Granit Xhaka remains Arsenal’s only long-term injury problem. Xhaka suffered a medial collateral ligament injury against Spurs back in late September and is expected to return towards the start of 2022. Thomas Partey will continue in his absence in midfield

Bukayo Saka is a major doubt for this match, having been withdrawn at half-time against Crystal Palace. Palace’s James McArthur kicked right through the back of his leg, lifting Saka into the air in the process, yet somehow stayed on the pitch. Alexandre Lacazette could make his first league start of the season should Saka not recover in time. Although, it is expected that Arteta will add another midfielder in Sambi Lokonga instead.

It will be interesting to see how Arteta sets up his midfield here. He played a 1-2 midfield against Palace with Partey as the sole pivot in the side. Lokonga is expected to return here in a double pivot 2-1, in a 4231 which Arsenal have used in the majority of their matches.

Aston Villa team news vs Arsenal

Trézéguet remains ruled out from the knee injury picked up against Liverpool towards the end of last season. He isn’t expected to return to action until the early part of 2022.

Keinan Davis is nearing a return from his long-term knee injury. He will be introduced back into the team gradually, and may be involved in the reserve league before seeing Premier League action again.

Leon Bailey is still struggling after his hamstring injury. He is rated as 50/50 to be involved here, should he satisfy the medical department as to his fitness level.

Matty Cash is also touch and go to be involved after suffering a dead leg against Wolves. Ashley Young is on standby to start in his absence if required.

Bertrand Traore missed the game last weekend with a thigh injury. He faces a late fitness test to be involved here, and is expected to only be involved from the bench at best.

Despite throwing away a 2-goal lead last weekend, Dean Smith isn’t expected to make any unforced changes to the Villa starting XI.
