Arsenal vs Aston Villa: Recommended bets
Both teams to score. Arsenal have conceded in six consecutive league games at the Emirates.
Pierre-Emerick Aubemayng to score. Aubameyang has not been at his most prolific so far this season, but he has scored two goals in his last three appearances. He also netted the winner in last season’s corresponding fixture.
Arsenal vs Aston Villa: Match preview
Arsenal host Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday evening.
Arsenal moved into the top half of the table last weekend thanks to a morale-boosting 1-0 win at Old Trafford. A second-half penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was enough to separate the sides.
The Gunners were also in midweek Europa League action against Norwegian side Molde. Mikel Arteta made nine changes for the game, Bernd Leno and Willian were the only two players to keep their place. Arsenal were comfortable 4-1 winners, thanks to two own goals and a goal apiece for Nicolas Pepe and Joe Willock. Arsenal are top of their Europa League Group B with three wins out of three.
Aston Villa are level on 12 points with Arsenal but sit one place above them in the table thanks to a superior goal difference.
Aston Villa lost 4-3 at home to Southampton last weekend. Villa were 4-0 down before the hour mark but managed to restore some pride thanks to late goals from Tyrone Mings, Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish.
Trezeguet scored the only goal of the game when the sides last faced each other at Villa Park in July, ending a run of seven consecutive defeats to the Gunners. Villa’s last win at the Emirates was back in 2013.
Last season’s corresponding fixture at the Emirates finished 3-2 in Arsenal’s favour. John McGinn opened the scoring before Arsenal were reduced to 10 men when Ainsley Maitland-Niles was shown a second yellow card.
Arsenal equalised through a Nicolas Pepe penalty but Villa were back in front less than two minutes later courtesy of Wesley. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Arsenal scored twice to turn the match around, with a goal from Calum Chambers and a spectacular free-kick from Aubameyang.
Arsenal and Aston Villa have met exactly 50 times in the Premier League. Arsenal have won 27 of those matches, drawing 14, and losing 9.
Arsenal team news vs Aston Villa
David Luiz is available again, but Mikel Arteta may stick with the back three that kept a clean sheet at Old Trafford.
Midfield duo Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny were two of Arsenal’s star performers last weekend and they could keep Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos out the side.
Hector Bellerin, Alexandre Lacazette, Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Gabriel Magalhaes were among Arsenal’s unused substitutes on Thursday night and should be recalled to the starting eleven.
Joe Willock’s recent performances in the Europa League will have also given Mikel Arteta something to think about. Willock didn’t even make the bench in the Gunners’ last league game.
Reiss Nelson missed out on Thursday with a knee injury and is a major doubt for the weekend.
Calum Chambers and Gabriel Martinelli are back in training following their respective knee injuries. Chambers could be back in action before the end of the calendar year but Martinelli is only expected to feature again in January.
Pablo Mari is another long-term absentee and is aiming to return to training after the international break.
Aston Villa team news vs Arsenal
Bertrand Traore will miss Sunday’s game after picking up a groin injury against Southampton. Trezeguet is the likely replacement out wide.
Emi Martinez will face Arsenal for the first time since leaving the club in the summer. Backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton has returned to full training following a long-term knee injury and could feature on the bench.
Kortney Hause has a groin strain and faces a late fitness test.
Wesley remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
