Cooper sent off
With the game poised at 1-0 to Leeds United against Manchester City, Marcelo Bielsa’s captain Liam Cooper was sent off for a tackle described as ‘reckless’ on Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus.
Leeds will have to hold on to their advantage with just 10 men…

Initially given a yellow card for the challenge, referee Andre Mariner went over to the VAR monitor where he assessed the incident in slow motion and decided to change his mind with the advice from Stockley Park and send off the Leeds defender.
The BT Sport referee pundit Peter Walton initially said he felt that the yellow given was the correct choice but quickly said that ‘by the letter of the law’ he could understand why the decision had been overturned.
‘You cant tackle anymore’
Social media exploded with frustration at the decision. Many claiming how they felt that the fact Cooper got the ball absolved him of whatever followed.
It’s never a red card. Gets the ball and follows through, but how can he pull his leg away?

I really like football but it’s getting softer and softer as time goes on. Never a red card. #MCILEE ⚽️

You just can’t tackle nowadays
— PhilB64 (@afcbally) April 10, 2021
Absolute joke. Never a red. What’s happening to football? You can’t make a tackle these days. He clearly won the ball.

However, many were quick to point out that whilst Cooper won the ball, the tackle was reckless enough to warrant the sending off.
“A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.” – nothing in the law about winning the ball or the intent of the original challenge. Keep up, especially if you work in football.

I’m really, really struggling to see how anyone believes that isn’t a red card.
If a player did that to your team and avoided a red card, you’d be doing up threads on corruption and bringing up the ‘how many English referees at the World Cup?’ tripe.

Getting the ball doesn’t give you immunity from punishment from subsequent contact, and shouldn’t. If it’s a wild challenge and/or makes connection with a knee in the air, it’s a red card.

Yeah, that’s a red card pic.twitter.com/7mAltXemcP

For all you saying he’s won the ball I know he did but the games changed. You’re not allowed tackle anymore. I made a career from tackling people 😂 Games gone soft so it’s a red.
