Yaya Toure opens up on apology letter to Pep Guardiola: ‘It has been a very long wait for an answer…’

Yaya Toure & Pep Guardiola

Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has today provided a revealing insight into his efforts to patch things up with Sky Blues boss Pep Guardiola.

Now 37, Toure was of course once regarded as one of the Premier League’s most feared midfielders.

After being utilised largely in a deep-lying role during his prior stint with Barcelona, a new, more advanced position was soon found for the Ivorian following his move to Manchester in 2010.

This enabled Toure to make full use of his frightening combination of power, close control and eye for goal.

The Citizens’ 2013/14 Premier League title-winning campaign perfectly encapsulated just how dominant Toure was at his free-flowing best, with the African having racked up a hefty 20 goals and 9 assists in the league alone.

All told, Toure lined out in City’s colours on over 300 occasions, solidifying himself as one of the club’s all-time greats before eventually departing in the summer of 2018.

‘This one was wrong’

The years since the one-time Monaco standout’s exit from the Etihad, however, have proven far from smooth sailing.

Amid apparent struggles to come to terms with his declining dynamism, Toure managed just 16 league appearances across a pair of stints with Olympiacos and Qingdao Huanghai.

But the veteran’s problems stemmed far beyond the confines of the pitch.

During an interview with France Football in 2018, Toure shocked the masses in taking aim at former boss Pep Guardiola in ruthless fashion.

The most noteworthy takeaway from the discussion came in the form of the Ivorian’s suggestion that the City boss had an issue with players of colour.

As outlined above, though, if the latest comments on the part of Toure himself are anything to go by, then the legendary midfielder appears to deeply regret ever putting such insinuations in the public sphere.

Speaking during a revealing interview with The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor this week, Toure delved into the subject of his fractured relationship with Guardiola, admitting that he has made numerous attempts to reach out to the Spaniard, to apologise:

‘When something happens that is wrong and you make a mistake, or people use your name and use you to do some wrong stuff, you have to make it OK. This one was wrong. I want to apologise for what happened, I want to apologise for doing something wrong.’

The 37-year-old, however, has been met by deafening silence on Guardiola’s part, with a heartfelt letter sent to the Etihad, detailing his regrets, having still not proven enough to provoke a response:

‘We decided we would try to communicate with some important people at the club to apologise and say I’ve been indecent to the club. Since then, it has been a very, very long while waiting for an answer, but we don’t get it. And, of course, if he feels like that, I cannot do anything. Of course, I’ve been in touch with some people there. But the people at the top, it’s impossible.’
