Borussia Monchengladbach star Yann Sommer secured for himself a head-turning piece of history on Saturday evening, during the club’s meeting with Bayern Munich.
Gladbach made the daunting trip to the Allianz Arena a short time ago.
With hosts Bayern having found the net on an eye-watering 20 occasions across their opening four fixtures of the campaign, Daniel Farke’s troops, understandably, were viewed as heavy underdogs to emerge from proceedings with any kind of haul.
When all was said and done, however, a brave, and altogether commendable display ultimately culminated in Borussia Monchengladbach emerging from the action with a share of the spoils.
And though, as a collective Farke’s troops therefore deserve credit, in truth, it was one man who proved the difference between a stalemate, and what would otherwise have been a heavy defeat.
The player in question? Yann Sommer.
Swiss international Sommer was, as expected, in from the off in Munich, no doubt predicting a busy day’s work between the posts.
Even he, though, could scarcely have predicted the 90 minutes in store...
Incredibly, over the course of an action-packed affair, the visitors’ no.1 racked up no fewer than 19 saves.
This marks a new Bundesliga record, a full five more than the previous best tally managed in Germany’s top-flight, also during a fixture featuring Bayern earlier this year:
