Xherdan Shaqiri reveals Jurgen Klopp’s role in Liverpool’s goal vs Huddersfield

After Liverpool’s victory over Huddersfield, Xherdan Shaqiri has been praising Jurgen Klopp for his tactics that helped create the only goal of the game.

‘Offensively the coach wanted me to be between the lines and I tried sometimes and we scored the goal’

Speaking after Huddersfield, Shaqiri stated:

“I started off in a midfield three and it was also something new because normally I’m more offensive, but I think I can play this position.

“Offensively the coach wanted me to be between the lines and I tried sometimes and we scored the goal. I’m really happy that I played from the beginning. I tried to give the manager a good performance. I’m really happy with that.

“My teammates know that I’m a player who can play that last pass.

“It was a good pass from Joe [Gomez], I got the ball between the lines. I turned and it’s difficult sometimes to defend when I turn and am in front of defenders. Mo made a good run and I gave him a perfect pass so it was a good goal.”

Huddersfield 0 Liverpool 1

After Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United earlier in the day, Liverpool knew they had a chance to open up a gap between one of their title rivals.

However, Liverpool would start the game without Sadio Mane, who was out injured and Roberto Firmino who was on the bench, possibly with the Champions League in mind.

Despite having no Firmino or Mane starting, it would take just 24 minutes for Shaqiri to slip through Salah who made it 1-0.

Huddersfield did have a few chances throughout the game, they would rattle the post from long range and had a goal disallowed.

But the game would remain 1-0 and the Terriers are now nine league games without a win.
