Switzerland 5 – Belgium 2
It’s been a crazy international break for Switzerland.
Last week the Swiss were on the receiving end of a shock 1-0 defeat to 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar.
However, just a few days later, the Swiss rallied from 2-nil down to beat the brilliant Belgians 5-2 in the UEFA Nations League.
Belgium were cruising after Thorgan Hazard scored a brace in the opening 17 minutes of the match. But Switzerland managed to turn the scoreline on it’s head by halftime.
A Ricardo Rodriguez penalty put the Swiss on the board, before Haris Seferovic scored twice before the interval.
Nico Elvedi added a fourth for Switzerland in the 62nd minute, while Seferovic completed his hat-trick six minutes from time.
Liverpool & Xherdan Shaqiri
Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri had an influential performance for Switzerland in the comeback win.
Interestingly, Shaqiri played in the number 10 role for the Swiss on Sunday night.
It’s a role which Shaqiri has previously occupied for his national team.
Could the midfielder be deployed in that position for Liverpool as well?
When turning out for Jurgen Klopp, Shaqiri is usually stationed on either the left or right flanks for the Reds.
But could he be more effective in the middle of the park instead?
Shaqiri’s two assists & his assist to an assist
The Liverpool star directly set up two Swiss goals.
On the half hour, Shaqiri found space in the Belgium box to cushion a header towards Haris Seferovic.
Seferovic duly converted at he far post to level the scores at 2-2.
On the hour mark, Shaqiri chalked up his second assist of the game.
Following a corner, the Liverpool star swung in danger cross into the Belgium box.
Nico Elvedi headed home to make the score 4-2.
Shaqiri also played a key role in the final Swiss goal of the night.
Tucked in on the right hand touchline, the Liverpool midfielder showed a brilliant touch to get out of danger.
Seconds later Seferovic completed his hat-trick.
