Arsenal’s supporters have taken to social media in their numbers on Friday night, to single one member of the club’s squad out for special praise.
The Gunners, of course, were back in action a short time ago.
In their first outing of the new campaign, and the Premier League curtain-raiser, Mikel Arteta’s troops made the trip across London, for a meeting with capital rivals Crystal Palace.
Arsenal headed into proceedings eyeing an altogether more positive start to the campaign this time round, after famously slipping to defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Brentford in the club’s 2021/22 opener.
And, when all was said and done, this is precisely what the evening’s visitors managed.
A pair of goals, netted by Gabriel Martinelli and Marc Guehi (OG) either side of the interval guided Arteta and co. to a comfortable 2-0 triumph, and an early spot at the summit of the Premier League table.
It is not goalscorer Martinelli, nor debut assist provider Oleksandr Zinchenko, though, who have since secured the majority of the plaudits across the Arsenal fanbase post-match.
Instead, this honour has been reserved for a member of the Gunners’ backline.
The player in question? William Saliba.
The three-year long wait to see stopper Saliba in competitive action in Arsenal colours was finally brought to an end on Friday, upon the Frenchman being afforded a starting berth at the heart of Mikel Arteta’s backline.
And to say that he subsequently went on to repay the faith of his manager would be something of an understatement.
In his spot on the right of the visitors’ central defensive pairing, Saliba stood up to the test when his side needed him most, fully deserving of his eventual Man of the Match prize.
In turn, the social media love-in has since been understandably widespread, with just some of the highlights from across Twitter showcased below:
