Will Wolverhampton Wanderers continue their European adventure?

It must not be forgotten that this season is the first time Wolves have been in continental competition since 1980 and they’re now through to their first quarter-final since 1972.

They started in the second qualifying round 13 months ago so have already seen off Crusaders, Pyunik, Torino, Braga, ŠK Slovan Bratislava, Beşiktaş, Espanyol and now Olympiacos to get this far.

The latter provided the toughest test with the second leg as recent as last Thursday night at Molineux.

The first meeting at Karaiskakis Stadium way back in March had seen a 1-1 draw so the tie was perfectly poised.

Raúl Jiménez put Wolves in front after just nine minutes last week but the hero was Rui Patrício in goal.

Portugal’s number one made a number of very good saves as Nuno Espírito Santo’s edged through 2-1 on aggregate.

This continues their mixed post-lockdown form which saw them win only two of their last six Premier League games.

Wolves ended up seventh in the table meaning the only way they’ll be in Europe next season is if they win this competition.

Can they keep their hopes of a trophy alive with a victory in Duisburg?

If the English side do not have too much European pedigree, no one has more in this competition then Sevilla.

Los Nervionenses are the record five-times UEFA Cup/Europa League winners, lifting the trophy in 2006, 2007, 2014, ’15 and ’16.

In fact, they’ve only lost one of their last 24 Europa League knockout ties, against Slavia Praha last season.

This includes last Wednesday’s win over AS Roma in a single-elimination tie at a neutral venue.

Prematch, that game was hard to predict but Sevilla were the much better side and first half goals from Sergio Reguilón and Youssef En-Nesyri saw them to a relatively easy 2-0 victory.

That extends their unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions, the longest the club have enjoyed since 1935, the year before the Spanish Civil War broke out.

It’s already been a successful season for Julen Lopetegui’s side having finished fourth in La Liga to qualify for the Champions League.

So, the pressure is off somewhat in this competition but Lopetegui would still love to follow in the footsteps of Juande Ramos and Unai Emery and lift the Europa League for Sevilla.

This tie could go either way but who will set up a semi-final clash with either København or Manchester United with victory at MSV-Arena?
