Wolves vs Besiktas prediction: Wolves 2-0 Besiktas

Wolverhampton Wanderers welcome Beşiktaş J.K. of Turkey to the Molineux Stadium, for the first time in their history, to conclude Group K in the UEFA Europa League for the 2019/20 season.

It will be the Black Eagles’ ninth visit to England in European competition. They currently hold a record of two wins (Chelsea and Manchester United), one draw (Spurs) and six defeats (Liverpool twice, Stoke, Arsenal, Leeds and Aston Villa).

They last faced an English opponent during the 2014/15 season. They were defeated 1-0 by Arsenal in Champions League qualifiers, then lost by the same score-line to Liverpool in the Europa League intermediate stage. Finally, they draw 1-1 at White Hart Lane with Spurs in the Europa League group stages.

For Wolves, this is their first season of European football since being frequently involved in the 70’s and early 80’s. It will also be the first time they have welcomed Turkish opponents to Molineux.

Wolves vs Besiktas: Who will win?

Wolves have won one and lost one at home in this season’s competition, both by a 1-0 score-line. While Besiktas have lost their two away fixtures. This sees Wolves come into the match as massive 1/2 favourites to make it three away defeats for Besiktas.

Only two matches in all of Group K have ended in a draw, none of which involved Besiktas. Odds of 10/3 are available if you believe the sides will cancel each other out on Thursday night.

Ignoring qualifying round matches, Besiktas have won just one of their last six away matches in European competition. This sees them enter this match as the 11/2 outsiders to win here.

Diogo Jota

With Raul Jimenez suspended for Thursday’s match, Patrick Cutrone looks set to lead the line for Wolves. He is yet to find the net in Europe this season in five appearances. However, he did score in his last start for Wolves, in the 2-1 defeat to Villa in the Carabao Cup.

Cutrone also netted the second in a 2-0 win against West Ham recently in a brief cameo from the bench. The Italian international is 11/8 to break his duck for Wolves in Europe this season. Or you can back him at 9/2 to do so as first scorer in the match.

Diogo Jota was in electric form at the weekend, scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw at Brighton. They were his first goals in twelve appearances for club and country. Jota hasn’t scored in Europe for Wolves since the qualifier stages, where he grabbed three goals in six appearances.

The Portuguese international is 5/1 to open the scoring on Thursday. Or you can get odds of 8/5 for him to score at any time during the game.

Adam Ljajic is Besiktas top scorer in this competition with two goals. This includes his injury time penalty in their previous match versus Slovan Bratislava to win the game. Ljajic is 4/1 to get on the scoresheet for the Black Eagles. He is 12/1 to do so as the first goal-scorer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sporting Clube de Braga have both secured their place in the draw for the UEFA Europa League knock-out stages in 2020. For Besiktas and Slovan Bratislava, that means an end of their European journey for another season, regardless of results on Thursday.

What remains to be decided is which of Wolves or Braga will top the group.

Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves need to win on Thursday and hope Braga fail to win in Bratislava to win the group and be seeded for the Round of 32 draw next week.

Sporting Clube de Braga
A Braga win, or a failure of Wolves to defeat Besiktas, would guarantee that Braga finishes top of the group.

Should Braga lose and Wolves draw at Besiktas, thus putting the teams level on points, Braga would still win the group due to a superior head-to-head record, following their 1-0 in Wolverhampton back in September.

Wolves vs Besiktas: Match preview

Wolves’ match on Saturday will highlight the need to be clinical in both boxes to win this match.

They created better quality chances, with 85% of their shots being from inside the box. They had almost double the Expected Goals (xG) of Brighton and had three big chances to their one. In spite of all this, they only managed to draw the game.

We can see above; this has been a recurring problem lately. They likewise dominated the chances against both Arsenal and Newcastle, yet in both instances only managed to come away from the game with a solitary point.

Besiktas will understand this feeling all too well of course. In the first match between these sides, it was they who out-shot Wolves by eleven shots to eight. Their xG was 1.0 to Wolves 0.9 and their non-shot xG, which indicates quality of possession from which no shot arises, was 1.3 to 0.8.

However, the crucial fact was that Wolves managed to get three of their eight shots on target (38%), one of which was Boly’s injury time winner. While at the other end, Besiktas only managed to get one of their eleven shots on target (9%). This shot on target was a Caner Erkin strike from a free-kick more than thirty yards from goal and at an angle.

It doesn’t matter how well Besiktas play if they aren’t going to work the opponent’s goalkeeper. Wolves fans will be hoping it is Loris Karius who is the busier of the two keepers once again on Thursday.

Phil Ofosu-Ayeh and Willy Boly are the only Wolves players to be ruled out due to injury prior to this match.

Morgan Gibbs-White is rated as doubtful here as he continues to be troubled by a back injury that has side-lined him since late-October.

Raul Jimenez will miss Thursday’s match due to suspension. Patrick Cutrone is expected to start in his absence.

Nuno Espirito Santo hasn’t rotated his side much between the Premier League and Europa League so far this season.

With qualification guaranteed, needing a big favour from Slovan Bratislava to top the group and a hectic Christmas schedule approaching, will he be temped into shuffling his pack more for this one?
