Nuno’s injury woes

Nuno Espirito Santo has had to experience a significant number of injury issues throughout the season, most notably to his striker Raul Jimenez who suffered a skull fracture in a collision with Arsenal’s David Luiz at the Emirates.

However, the loss of Spanish defender Jonny Otto led to the signing of Brazilian full-back Marcal from Lyon. Marcal provided apt cover for the former Celta Vigo full-back, although he has recently suffered an injury himself leading to an absence of natural left-sided full-backs at the club.

“Marcal is inside, in the gym, he had an operation and needs some more time,” said Nuno prior to their FA Cup win over Chorley. “First, he has to be free of pain, then we will start integrating and getting his fitness levels again.”

“There will be some more weeks in front of him yet. It was in the game against Tottenham, he had a slip on his left leg, he felt a really strong pain in the abdominal area, so that required treatment and an operation to solve the problem.”

Max Kilman has been deputising in the left centre-back role of a back three with Pedro Neto used in an auxiliary left-wing back position.

Jonny Otto returns

With the absence of Marcal, and the unorthodox selections which Nuno has had to resort to, he will be relieved to learn that Jonny Otto is now involved in full training.

The Spaniard has been seen scoring some extravagant goals during his time rehabilitating and will excite the Wolves supporters about a very imminent return to the line-up.

Jonny was a regular figure in the Wolves side which just missed out on European football at the end of last season and scored twice and assisted in a further two goals and had looked to press on from his transfer from La Liga until an injury set him back.

His versatility to be able to play as a left-wing back with a back three or as the solid left-back in a back four means that he provides the Portuguese coach with many options going forward for the end of the season.
