Willian urges Chelsea to ‘play every game like a final’ to secure Champions League place

Chelsea embarrassed by West Ham

Chelsea faced a trip to Premier League strugglers West Ham on Wednesday, as they looked to continue their fine recent run of form.

The Blues had gone unbeaten since English football’s resumption, putting together a three-game win streak.

West Ham, on the other hand, had been in dismal form, with a Chelsea victory at the London Stadium having looked almost nailed on.

As such, when Willian fired Frank Lampard’s men into the lead 42 minutes in, their victory looked very much assured.

However, Tomas Soucek drew the Hammers level moments before the interval.

Michail Antonio then put West Ham into the lead inside 51 minutes.

A scintillating Willian free-kick did look to have rescued a point for Chelsea late on, but Andriy Yarmolenko would emerge from the bench to put West Ham back in front with 89 minutes on the clock, securing all 3 points for the hosts.

Willian’s rallying cry

This result saw Chelsea pass up a great opportunity to put some daylight between themselves and their top-four rivals.

The Blues also missed out on the chance to go 3rd, by overtaking a struggling Leicester City.

Now, though, Chelsea are just two points clear of both Manchester United and Wolves – two sides who are very much at their best right now.

As a result, Willian has moved to send something of a rallying cry to his Chelsea teammates.

After expressing his disappointment at Wednesday’s loss, the Brazilian urged Chelsea to ‘play every game as a final’:

“It’s very disappointing.

“The plan was to win the game and we missed a chance to go third. At least we have a game on Saturday to win at home. It’s not a time to complain. We have to win on Saturday.

“We have to play every game as a final, and fight to get into the Champions League places. We deserve to finish in the top four. Sometimes we have gone up and down, but I think we deserve to be there and we have to keep that position.”
